pittsburgh- applying without nclex?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hi everyone, I am a soon-to be new grad from an ADN program interested in pediatrics in the pittsburgh area. I am curious- will hospitals/facilities in the pittsburgh area consider hiring graduates before they have taken the nclex? Or should I just wait until after I have a pennsylvania license to apply?

Thanks for any/all advice you might have!

Wait until you have your license.

You should start applying now. I graduated in December and was offered a position before I had a license (with a certain major hospital system in Pittsburgh).

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Doesn't PA offer interim permits?

Specializes in Primary Care.

It never hurts to start applying now, but hospitals are phasing out the GN position because of cost-risk. I only have experience with the UPMC system, so I can't speak to other systems. When I was applying for jobs in late 2012 / early 2013 there were some positions that specified they were available for GN hire, but they were few.and far between. I had 1 interview before I passed but I didn't get hired because they already hired too many GNs. The only other interview I got was after I passed. I was hired and that's where I still work.

You can apply for your temporary license prior to taking your boards. Most hospitals will hire you with work restrictions until you pass. If you fail your first attempt, your temporary license will be revoked.

Specializes in long-term-care, LTAC, PCU.

Upmc hired me as a gn but that was 6 yrs ago. Heard they weren't doing that so much anymore. I would apply anyway.

thanks everyone!
