Looking For Other Pa Nurses!!!!

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hello all,

I'm taking this chance to meet other nurses in PA. Who knows, maybe I've meant some of you. I graduated a year ago, and meant a lot of other nursing students in clinicals, and such.

Anyway, if you're interested in joining this discussion to meet others in PA who are recent grads., leave some comments.

Anyway, I'm wondering what kinds of hours everyone else is working, where people are working, what kinds of skills you're all learning, and your current job satisfaction, etc. Right now, I work quite a number of hours in a cardiovascular surgical unit. It's pretty good experience. Sometimes I find I get taken advantage of to work a lot of hours, but most times I don't mind, cuz I get a lot of good experience. I may move on to CRNA school someday. Any body else have grad. school aspriations?

Anyway, if you're a recent grad. or from PA, join the discussion, and let people know what's out there for new grads.

Thanks,

Hey everyone! I am hoping.. and wishing to move to central PA to work and get my masters at penn state. Anyone here heard or know anything about how hard it is to get into the MSN program there? Also anyone work in state collge area? I really would love to work in a clinic or health department.

Thanks everyone!

I live in State College. I love it here. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the MSN program, but I live adjacent to PSU. My daughter earned her PHD in genetics here, and there are clinical interns at our hospital.

Well, I'm not a nurse YET!! Only 6 weeks left though!! I have my first interview at Reading Hospital this Friday. I will be gradauting from LPN school. I live in Lancaster County and have worked as a CNA for 18 years!! It was finally time to move on!! I plan to do a distant study program for my RN so I won't miss out on so much time with my hubby and 2 young kids. Although i am thankful school is almost done I am TERRIFIED at the same time. Anyone else ever feel this way??

Personally, I think it's normal to feel that way, because you get med mistakes drilled into you so much you get traumatizid from it. I know I did. But once you get into it, it's like any other job; you get used to the routine, and it becomes second nature. I think being an EMT and a leader of our squad for 10 years was actually more difficult.

I would suggest you work at homecare or something like that. Remember, you will have a preceptor who will show you pretty much what is done anyway.

Not now, but I am a frequent flier to the hospital as an inpatient. I'm disabled too. But when I'm up to it, I liven up the place, and all of the older employees know me very well. Read my profile, and I'm going to send you a private message. (PM.) I did some of my training there.

Hello,

I am from Pittsburgh and I am a nursing school hopeful. I applied to the Duquesne School of Nursing in May 2005 and they stop accepting applications in January 06 and mail letters at the end of February beginning of March. I pray that I am accepted. I am an accountant who desperately wants to switch careers. I don't make that much money and I know I won't make much as a nurse but I want to do something that I am going to love to do. I want to help people. In my family, I'm always coaching people when they're about to deliver a baby. I once pulled a puppy out of my pregnant dog.

Are there any others who have gone to Duquesne's Nursing school and give me some idea on what to expect? Or if you've gone to any nursing school and can give me some ideas on what to expect I'd appreciate it. Currently I am taking my prerequites at CCAC. I have to pay for them myself because I already have a degree so I don't qualify for grants.

I'd like to hear from other PA folk so write back.:balloons:

Hi everyone!

I will be graduating from Texas Christian University with my BSN in May. I am moving to Pittsburgh, and I am totally lost. I am having trouble finding hospitals that do internships or have GN programs. Does anyone have any suggestions on hospitals? I am really interested in fertility clinics, but can't seem to find one, and Magee does not do GN programs. I am also interested in critical care(I absolutely loved it in clinical), but I am afraid that I will not be competent enough, so I may apply for a med/surg unit. Any input would help. Thanks!

Hi, my name is Sue. I've been an RN for almost 3 years. I'm in NEPA, working on a pediatric/medsurg unit. Right now we have more geriatric patients than peds, and a handful that should be in hospice. I've suggested a unit motto of "Circle of Life". Most of the time I enjoy my work. Friday, though I had 7 patients which I believe is totally unsafe. There were 21 patients on the unit, another staff RN and I, an agency RN who just started doing med/surg after 20 years at a state psch. facility and and RN and Tech from the NICU, who did vital signs and answered call bells...which was a tremendous help. I was so busy with my patients that I don't even know how the agency nurse made out with hers. She asked a few questions towards the beginning of the shift. I had platelets hanging on one of my patients...his white count was a 1.7 and platets were 19,000 and the other RN was giving her patient blood for a count of 6 point something. It was just nuts. My only salvation was that it wasn't my weekend to work. Something NEEDS to be done. Earlier in the week administration was meeting with us, promising us that they are recruiting more nurses and were only going to assign appropriate patients to peds. There is movement to get a union in, I'm not sure how I feel about it, but at this point I feel like SOMETHING needs to give.

Sue
