I'm extremely excited to say that I've been accepted to both Seattle University and the Mass. General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. I've been accepted to both institutions for their direct entry master's in nursing for non-nurses program (mental health track).

Although it's a very welcome dilemma to have, I have approximately a week to make a decision that'll decide my next three years (at the very least).

I would love to hear any and all opinions that may make my decision easier

Factors I'm considering

  • General outlook/satisfaction toward each institution. In general and from alumni
  • Pros/Cons of each city: I.e. weather, people, activities, etc
  • As I plan to settle down in Oregon, how much weight should I put on making geographically relevant connections (Should I emphasize making connections (Seattle) or stretching myself and potentially growing more via moving to the east coast where I've never lived and rarely visited (Boston))
  • Cost of tuition/Possible financial aid offered
  • Quality of education
  • Job placement after graduation

At such an exciting and uncertain time I'm so grateful to receive feedback on the decision. Thank you all so much!

Congrats! That's a great spot to be in. Seattle U and MGHIHP were two of the schools that I chose between last year. Ultimately I chose Seattle U but I had some additional factors that pushed me in that direction (I already live in the Seattle area, my husband has a good job here, and I'm planning on working here after graduation). I felt that I would get a good education at either school so it came down to other factors. For example, I had heard that MGHIHP uses some online courses which I wasn't a fan of.

As for financial aid, MGHIHP offered me a really nice merit-based scholarship, but most of Seattle U's scholarships are need-based or are focused on underrepresented populations in nursing. It also doesn't seem like they have a whole lot of scholarship money available, but they are also one of the most reasonably priced direct- entry programs that I've seen.

Good luck with your decision! I think you can't go wrong!

Thanks so much for your response, @atki! You shared some super valuable information. Like you, I'm not too fond of online classes (I love in-class and/or hands on learning). I roughly did the math and I'm calculating that total tuition/books/fees at Seattle U (according to their FAQ section) is $85,000-$95,000 and $106,000-$112,000 for MGHIHP. I think I'm starting to solidly lean toward SU.

So you're at SU currently? How are you liking it?? Is the first year as rigorous as it sounds?

I'm just finishing up my third quarter here and every quarter has been challenging in different ways. The good news is that you're with some incredible people and you will find yourselves helping each other out along the way. It's tough, but doable. You'll be amazed at how much you learn!

I do not have an opinion to share but wanted to say I'm glad to see someone considering Seattle vs. Boston because I'm working on pre-reqs now & planning things out (financially speaking), and have pretty much determined I want to go to school here in WA or want to move to New England for school, and am looking at both Boston College & MGHIP.

I'm excited to see what others have to say. Good luck either way on what your decision is, and please keep us posted!
