I am planning on doing pre reqs at TCC this Spring and Summer to apply for (hopefully) admittance to the OU summer 2012 Accelerated BSN (I already have a BS). Well, I went up to Rogers State in Claremore today to speak with someone about their programs (I need a plan B in case I don't get in to OU because it is so competitive) and the possibility of my classes transferring from my 1st bachelors degree. I was shocked when I left. I had already done my research of the pre reqs and how to apply, but what really shocked me was how the lady really would't speak in depth with me (even though I called ahead to make sure I could speak with someone) and what she said about OU. She was asking why I was taking certain classes and I told her, "Those courses are required to be admitted to OU and right now I am exploring all my options." She replied by saying, " I would think twice before you consider OU. We have so many students that leave their program to come to ours ('which is the best in the state'). Its incredibly hard and fast paced. They are so disorganized and just be prepared to have your classes taught by really incompetent and lazy people. You will have to do so much work yourself." She carried on until I said, "It is a Bachelor's program, so I expect it to be MUCH harder and since it is 2 years crammed into 14 months that it why its called the 'Accelerated Program.' I am completely aware the program is hard and fast-paced and I would expect that it would be VERY demanding. I also think you should know the OU advisor said I should also look into your program because the nurses that graduate form your program are highly respected." She then kinda bit her tongue and said, "Well, I wasn't trying to talk bad about OU, I just thought you might want to know." This left a bad taste in my mouth. I know this in one woman, but I feel so turned off by RSU because of this ONE woman! When I went to OU the advisor sat and spoke with me for 1 and 1/2 hours and squeezed me in and had my transcripts evaluated in ONE DAY while the woman at RSU made me stand and talk to her and wouldn't even evaluate my courses until I, "took the dosage calculation course." It makes it difficult to apply to various programs when they have such different prerequisites.

Any help or advice on RSU would be greatly appreciated. I really would rather go to OU because I live in Tulsa and its shorter and a bachelors degree, but I have to keep my options open. Thanks for the help!

You should pm me because I have experience with OU. I am kind of wondering if the advisor you spoke to is a former OU teacher who had bad experience. I will tell you right now that RSU is excellent and they say that you will know what you are doing when you graduate. I have only worked with one RSU nurse grad since I have been a student and she was great. I have worked with many OU nurse grads and they were incredible as well. I don't think you learn to be a nurse so much in nursing school. I think you get that after nursing school, no matter where you go. There is an incredible amount of info to learn.

I have no idea who that blonde lady is. "D" who I sent you a PM about is a brunette. I already have a bach from TU. TCC jerked me around during my pre-reqs and I wasn't able to get Chem and Micro in time for OUACC. That's why I chose RSU. You can go straight from and RN to a MSN since you already have one Bach. There are several schools that have that bridge program. Dosage Calc is a joke. It's SO easy. That is the one thing I didn't like about RSU. You have to take that before you can be concidered for the program. "D" will talk to you about what you need to apply. I live in Tulsa as well and the drive isn't that bad. Plus it is a lot cheaper than OU and not nearly as competitive. OUACC only takes like 35 students. This year RSU had 87 first year nursing students. Plus they only look at your pre-reqs. Not your overall GPA. That way you are only ranked on your science grade basically and not that you got a D in underwater basket weaving 10 years ago. I would apply to both. That way you have choices. We have a couple of instructors that left the OU program and came to RSU. I don't know the details of why.

How is the RSU program? I went to TU nursing program...unfortunately I flunked out with a D in Nursing 54, I was only 6 points from passing....However, I am gonna go to TCC also this semester and take a couple of classes and talk to some advisors about what my next big step. Also, TU is really expensive and unfortunately I couldn't afford it. Any help would be great about other nursing programs!

The RSU program is hard. I can't speak for other nursing programs. My degree from TU was in Business. It was hard, but I think nursing at RSU is harder. You have to commit 100% or you will not make it. Your personal life will probably suffer some. I know my kids aren't getting the attention that they need, but I just keep telling myself this is temporary. Our first semester is offically over and we lost about 25% of the class. It is a good program and the instructors are really nice, and they really do want you to make it. I think their hearts break just as much as the students who fail the program. You can check out the requirements at http://www.rsu.edu/academics/health-sci/nursing/packets.asp

I am almost done with my pre-reqs at TCC and am seriously considering RSU as my primary option. I was wonder if any of you have been accepted to RSU since your last postings and what does the dosage calc class all about? The website somewhat implies it's just a test and then it implies it's a class.

It is a one credit hour class. Very simple. After the initial class (pre-req) every semester in the nursing program there is a dosage calc test which must be passed in order to continue in the program.

This an old blog it looks like, but I have a question about RSU nursing. I am currently a student at rsu and am applying for the Fall program. I have A's in Anatomy, Cell Bio, Nutrition, Dosage Calc, Comp 2, Psch, Gov, Sociology, College experience, and B's in History, Computer, comp 1. These are the courses that are now looked at for admission into the nursing program for RSU. I'm really nervous to whether I'll be accepted because I had to retake some basic courses like psch, sociology, comp 2, and college experience. I took those courses in 08' when I wasn't in college for the right reasons so I retook them recently to improve my gpa. I was told by the nursing program that they only look at our most recent grades, but it makes me wonder if this is accurate. I'm currently in micro biology and Pharmacology and I'm doing awesome making A's in both classes. I hope I get in even though I started off to a bad start in 08'. What do you think?

I know this is an old post but I thought Id put my two cents in. I am an RSU grad. I have started the BSN program but I am not currently attending because of health issues. RSU is worth it. Hard work...yes. We, as nurses, have peoples lives in our hands. Its serious. BUT...I loved nursing school. The good and the bad. It helped me mature as a student and as an adult. I think the teaching staff has changed since I went there. When I was hired as a new grad various people told me that RSU has a good reputation and produces excellant nurses. I think so too. Nursing school is hard to get into and hard to complete but is worth it.

I'm thinking about going into RSU. I need help! do I have to take the pre req in RSU or can I take it at tcc? they want to look at my ACT but I haven't been to school for 7 years now and I totally probably will score low on my ACT. what should I do? any please help

MK90 have you ever taken the ACT? You do not have to take the pre-reqs at RSU but make sure the courses are equivalent before you enroll. For example, Comp 1 will be the same at each college. However, you can take a chemistry with a lab and without a lab. You probably need the one with the lab. Those are the types of things you have to make sure of. TCC may have a list of equivalent courses (they used to). It is very important to make good grades especially in your science classes in order to get into any nursing school. Get in touch with TCC if that is where you want to get your pre-reqs. They may need an ACT too.

I know this is an older post but I am curious to what grades everyone got on their pre-req classes. I am applying for fall '16 and I am really nervous I will not be getting in. I have all A's in the pre-req classes except for cell bio and I received a B in that class. Should I retake cell bio? or try working on other classes like chem that i received a C in?
