Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Those of you who are part way through the program, was the APA stuff really overwhelming in the beginning? The formatting and all is tedious, but not as bad to me, because it's something that is verifiable to make sure you are doing it correctly. But the grammar aspect seems so confusing. It's been years since learning this stuff. Do they grade hard on the grammar? Obviously it needs to be correct, but do they really nit pick things? Trying to remember to use this word or that one, things like that seem so confusing. I know a lof of us who just started are feeling pretty overwhelmed with it.

Seriously it all depends on the TA you land. You'll have some that won't take off for anything really. Then you'll have others who go through your stuff w/a fine tooth comb. I just just module 1 to gauge my TA's grading style them revise from there. Also if you use Microsoft (spell/grammar) check, you should be relatively fine.

Are you referring to all classes in general in the OU online program? I will be starting this fall, just curious. Thanks

I was meaning in general. You have to write all your papers in APA format.

Yes…Unless you are filling out a grid. Then you have to do only your in text citations and reference page in APA format.

In my experience, the OU nursing classes are extremely picky in regards to grammer and APA. I just finished the Fashion and Culture class. The format of the assignments and grading of format seemed more relaxed.

I registered for spring 2 and the professor sent me an email saying the option is available the first week of the class and that Jarvis 6th edition is needed as the answers will be from that edition. It stated it will be 100 multiple choice question.

So they might still be hope to test out?!? That would be such fantastic news. I plan on taking it in the summer, did they mention to you if it was just online or does it have to be proctored?? Good luck to you and I hope this continues to be an option.

Hi all! I am looking into Intro to Nutrition and was wondering if you had to have add lab if you took it online? Thanks for any info!

No lab. I am taking it now. Weekly discussion post (no replies necessary, I think). I was so used to doing them with the NRSE classes, I did just to be sure this first week. Two assignments and two exams...each work 1/3 of the grade...yikes!

Yes. I had only used MLA in the past and getting used to APA was a bit difficult. I did not know the words "Running Head" only went on the first page and not thereafter. That cost 2 points. The TA thing is a pain. Some will nick 0.5 for the same thing others will nick 2 full points. Some will give a warning the first week and then deduct later and others will go big from the get go. Either way, I did not buy the book. I have used the OWL site and another website and have never missed more than 2 points for formatting issues.

You have to respond to 1 classmate in nutrition. But nothing long.

Quick question for those of you already in the program. Did you have to do the Personal Statement as if you were applying to graduate school in the first class? The grading rubric talks about the citation/reference page. What are we supposed to cite or reference? I'm confused. It's a personal statement, there is nothing to reference, it's about yourself.

I used an article from a critical care nursing journal to define the role of an APN....because that's the role I planned on pursuing. Only used one in-text citation!
