Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

OU well seeing as I am a student and that I have already enrolled and paid my money I dont think they can use that excuse.I called and asked them to look deeper into my DARS because this was the second review of my DARS and figured that was it. Nursing informed me that it was still not complete, so like I said, until I know for sure I will take the courses I know that I will need and will leave the others until I know they are completely finished with my DARS

If you get a DARS report before you start you will be the first one I have ever heard that does so. I believe it is a time/financial issue. They have priority for students that are enrolled ...not prospective students. does not make it right but its their reality and unfortunately we have to live with it.

If anyone out there got a DARs report BEFORE they started the program please post here. I just do not know anyone that did. I work with a bunch of people in the program and not ONE has. I think it's 2 fold. 1. They are busy. 2. Well once you are in the middle of the first class....and they still dont have your DARS report accurate you think you have alot LESS to do to meet all the requirements. I was told there is NOT a math placement. I was lead to believe there is not prereqs for Statistics. However I am not taking stats there. I have a friend that said she took a look at it and found that it appears very difficult to take online. Maybe someone else out there knows how hard it is and if there is a prereq for it.

Chuckster...I feel for you but there just put you behind everyone else that is starting before you. That is what my take on it is. It is a matter of survival for them. They have so many people coming in at the last minute to that they will put in front of you because ....well it makes economic sense to them. I am wondering why you did not start sooner? This would have put an end to some of your misery and mystery behind what they will accept for you.

here is OHIO's Transfer Policy on D grades. The bolded parts are what caught my eye. Hope this helps ya'll

Transfer of D Grades PolicyPolicy Approved by the Articulation and Transfer Advisory Council - February 17, 2005

Further Clarifications Provided by the Oversight Committee of the Articulation and Transfer Advisory Council - May 27, 2005, and December 8, 2005

As of Fall 2005, Ohio public institutions of higher education are to accept and apply all transfer coursework with a letter grade of D or higher as the institution would for a native student under the business rules and academic policies of the receiving institution. These business rules and policies may include, but are not limited to, such areas as effective course dates, age of coursework, requirements of a particular major or program, and eligibility.

Points of Clarification:

1.This policy was adopted to ensure the equitable treatment of transfer students with native students across Ohio's public institutions of higher education.

2.State-assisted colleges and universities which offer D as the lowest passing grade are required to accept all college level courses with a grade of D or higher. Institutions which offer D- as the lowest passing grade are required to accept all college level courses with a grade of D- or higher. It should be noted that this point applies to other clarifications below that refer to grades of D/D-.3.State-assisted colleges and universities shall establish policies which honor the acceptance and award of transfer credit for D/D- graded courses completed in or after Autumn 2005. Institutions may choose to be more lenient in the application of this policy and accept D/D- graded courses completed prior to Autumn 2005. (See also clarification 2)

4.While state-assisted institutions are required by this policy to accept D/D- graded courses only from other Ohio state-assisted colleges and universities, they have the option to extend their policy to accept such coursework from other regionally accredited institutions.

5.To provide equitable treatment the requirements to accept courses graded D/D- shall apply equally to transfer students and to continuing students who completed coursework elsewhere in or after Autumn 2005. (e.g. a continuing student at university X who takes a course at college Y, while away on an internship/vacation, would be eligible to transfer that work back to university X if he/she earned a grade of D/D- or higher in the course.) (See also clarification 2)

6.The 1990 Ohio Articulation and Transfer Policy section which requires the acceptance of all college level courses which they have passed (D/D-) remains in effect for all students with an earned A.A./A.S. degree. (See also clarification 2)

7.The 1990 Ohio Articulation and Transfer Policy section required that individual courses completed subsequent to the award of an A.A./A.S. degree needed to have a grade of C or higher to be accepted and awarded credit. This portion of the policy has been modified to be consistent with the acceptance of credit at the D/D- level or higher when completed in or after Autumn 2005. (See also clarification 2)

8.The 1990 Ohio Articulation and Transfer Policy required that students without an A.A./A.S. degree needed to have a C or better in each class used to complete their Transfer Module. This portion of the policy has been modified to require a D/D- or better grade for courses completed in or after Autumn 2005. (See also clarification 2)

9.This policy does not override institutional admission standards and/or requirements of entrance into a specific academic program. (For example, should a receiving institution require native students to earn a grade of C or better for a specific course in a major, transfer students must meet the same requirement. The D/D- course would be accepted for transfer credit but it would not be applied to the specific course in the major.) (See also clarification 2)10.Consistent with the spirit of the policy and clarification 2, there is no universal minimum grade or quality points for the acceptance of credit and thresholds for this are set by institutional grading policy at the D or D- level.

I am not sure if they are the same price. Their bills are just as confusing as a DARS report. Also they have changed the price for the Academic Outreach Program.....its the price that is on their front page now. It is at least double what it was in October yet still a bargain they state and well under the state average. It appears that is the case but it stinks to have the price raised on you right after you start. I know it has slowed alot of people down because there are limitations to tuition reimbursement. The demand for the program dictactes they can raise the price ....but the Ohio Board of Regents had something do to with the price raise also. Some online students were paying alot more than the Academic Outreach Initiative Students before they made the price the same.

OU student: I listed the courses that they accept as junior level english along with what they accepted for math. It makes no sense that we would have to take a math placement test since we are distance learning program but it does makes sense that inorder to take STATS you have to meet the requirements for the course work prior. It would appear that there are requirements to met before you can take STATS.AS far as courses that would compare.OU general education requirements state that a course like Calculus would be an equiv to STATS. OU also has a ton of Junior Eng courses. I have already picked the class I want.

OUstudent I would like to know if there general education course cost the same as their nursing courses?I sent you an email but I never heard anything back from you.

How strict is OU on admissions? Reason I ask is I went to a 4 year college right out of high school, for 3 years. I have most, if not all, of the general ed requirements completed, with a cummulative GPA of 3.5. After that school, I went to another 4 year college for 2 years, where I didn't do as well...got a couple of D's in classes that aren't needed for the RN-BSN program.

After the second 4 year college, I went to a community college and got my ADN with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Do they look heavily at the prior school's cummulative GPA's in deciding on whether to admit or not?

TIA for any info anyone can provide.

I have a Biochemistry degree and have taken up to Calculus 4, yet I still had to take Statistics at OU. So I would reconfirm your calculus statement. Their cost per credit hr is $153. So it doesn't matter if you are taking nursing or non-nursing classes.

HTHs....

Hey Chuckster, I knew back in Feb they had changed the way there were doing admissions. They even switched to paper admissions for a time while the computer admission program was being worked on .I really dont think they will make you wait as long if you are to be enrolled in June. The secratary @ the nursing school was very helpful with all the questions I had regarding the program.Try that Chuck. Besides all that I have found better success with just calling the school of nursing directly. I have to say that admissions wasnt very helpful. Shedrick did help some when I was trying to get ahold of advisors and no one seemed to want to answer the phone over there. I was starting to wonder if the school was actually in business. To date I have still been unable to get ahold of my so called academic advisor, buit I was able to get quite a bit of info from school of nursing.

I've been attending OU since Jan 2011, and have yet to speak with my assigned advisor. I just bypass her and contact the office of admissions directly.

With a 3.0 GPA you'll be fine. They may have you retake a class if your grade was below a C and it's a class needed in order to obtain a BSN...

Luckily, the classes I did poorly in are not ones required for the BSN. If I don't really need or want to transfer any of those classes, do I even have to submit the transcripts from that school?

Yeah deltarox. my statement has already been checked hon. This is what the statement from the school states. I would suspect that folks would do their homework. Im just posting the info.

PL3 (Placement Level 3): Placement at this level demonstrates quantitative skill competence sufficient to fulfill the Tier I quantitative skills requirement. If your major requires that you enroll in a quantitative skills course, placement at Level 3 indicates preparation for MATH 263A(calulus1 ) (or MATH 266A for natural science majors) and any course in Levels 1 or 2. A level 3 placement does not guarantee a waiver of college or major requirements in mathematics. Contact your college office to see if a college waiver is in effect for your major.
