Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

I guess it is not clear in my previous posts. I PLAN to take Nutrition. I am not at OU now I am at Sinclair taking support courses. Will return in October with target grad date Spring 2012 Commencement!(any spring commencement 2012 people out there?)

I decided to take Sociology at Sinclair per their recommendation because they do not offer it online and it is the only required class they do not. So I am there this term taking other required classes as well. I then will take Statistics at Miami(attend classes). From what I understand the statistics online looked pretty tough to a coworker of mine that is very smart. Luckily she challanged OU and they accepted other Math classes she had taken prior. I am not that lucky. However, besides nursing and the Ethics class I took and the Nutrition class I plan to take winter intersession I am doing all other work at Sinclair or Miami(attend classes for some work).

If anyone out there is in the Cincy area (or within a reasonable drive)and is considering taking advantage of the winter intersession to take nutrition please contact me. Perhaps we can split the cost of a proctor. It is my understanding there are maybe three exams and the proctor charged $45 or more and I may be not recalling htat correctly. It could have been double that. I have not checked into it yet to get more details so if anyone out there knows more about the Nutrition class please enlighten us. Also if you know more about the winter intersessions I would love info. It may be challanging to arrange protors during that time but wil good planning I am sure it could be done!

How was Nutrition? Hard/easy? Lots of papers/quizzes?

Thanks

OU student-I live near Dayton, ohio. I dont know what Im planning just yet for winter but I did see that university of Dayton has proctors for $20/hr. If I must i was planning to go there for proctored exams. The places that offered free testing were a bit far....we shall see.

Im wondering how much Sinclair has changed. I loved the online and in class courses. Because of the low cost tuition I found that there are many courses offered that fall into the general education requirement. Im thinking Ill be taking those. You cant beat $89/cr hr vs. $153

I am starting the program June 20th. There is very little communication from them!! I've only been told that we will receive our info a few weeks before the start date. Is that really enough time to learn the ropes and buy books????? Never even received an official acceptance notice.I'm a little worried....

michelemybell... I too am planning on starting on June 20th. It was my understanding that acceptance e-mails are sent out 6 weeks prior to the start date, so I would expect to see it within the next week or so. I agree that there is poor communication from OU, but am hoping that it is better once I am actually enrolled. From what I have been reading the students actually in the program say that there is a big difference once accepted. I plan on looking for my books on Amazon to compare prices and if need be order books from them in order to get them quickly.

michelemybell i was told the same thing abotu starting in june. are you doing transitions first?

hi,

everyone has to take transitions first and excellence last. since the classes are only 5 wks, i would recommend renting books. several online sites rent for way cheaper. and return shipping is typically free..

I'm also starting in June. Already have my book for Trans - bought it on Amazon. When I asked about "official" acceptance letters, Shedrick told me it would be the middle of May or first of June. I think there has been an overwhelming response to this program ... and the people in admissions are having quite the time keeping up! :clown:

Glad to hear similar stories. As nurses we like to plan way ahead!!!!! I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Another blogger suggested renting books. At this popint I don't even know which ones I need. Sent an email to Shedrick last night.

If you check the summer course mini syllibus - it tells you what books are required for each class. I read somewhere, the book used for Trans is also used in another class. Sorry - can't remember which class it is. Haven't bought the book for my class starting in July - I think it is Community Nursing - and I am REALLY hoping they will accept my credits from my Diploma program. If they do accept those credits - it looks like I will be taking Management Issues. Fingers crossed!!!!

Here is the book recommended for the class:

Scope and Standards of Practice. Edition: 2nd. Publisher: American Nurses Association. [iSBN: 9781558102828]

To be honest, I NEVER used it. Most of my assignments were regarding online articles, etc.

A MUST-HAVE book is Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, since EVERYTHING you write needs to be in APA format.

Good Luck!!

I am in the same boat as you - applied for admission to the summer session and have yet to hear anything. Since I applied in February and hadn't heard anything at all back from OU, I contacted the admissions office last month. For the record, you can't get anyone by phone and must either leave a voice mail and hope someone gets back to you or use e-mail. I chose the latter and got a return message the same day:

Thank you for your e-mail. We have received your application. The reason you have not yet received an e-mail verifying receipt [of the application] is due to the fact that Ohio University is in the process of implementing a new Student Information System. Beginning with Summer 2011 applicants, such as yourself, your record will be loaded into the new Student Information System which is not yet live. Once the system is live, you will receive an e-mail indicating that your application has been received. . . . We will begin to process admission to the Summer term within the next several weeks, and you can expect to receive an e-mail regarding an admission decision sometime in May or very early in June depending upon the amount of transfer work being applied to your record at Ohio University. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you!

As an aside, I'd like to mention that I contacted the OU enrollment advisor (the same person that rninme mentions) on several occasions prior to sending the e-mail to the admissions office. While he always responded, he provided essentially zero useful information. In fact, even the suggestion to contact the admissions office was one made by someone on this board, not the enrollment advisor. When I got the response above, I sent it to said enrollment advisor, who was completely unaware of the changes and dates in the admissions process.

Having been through the transfer evaluation process in the recent past (with UT-A, my backup RN-BSN program), I expect to have to fight to get courses accepted (just one small example: I keep getting told that I need to take Intro to Pysch because my intro course was called Human Behavior I - so it's clear to me that the evaluators do not bother to check catalogs and rely almost entirely on the course titles). If I don't hear back from OU until late this month, not to mention June, for a 20 June start, that will not be enough time to get any evaluation issues straightened out. I do not want to start a program without having a complete and equitable evaluation and an accurate course map in place.
