You might be from Ohio if you can pronounce Wapakoneta and know where it is.

My husband and some friends are from the Lima area and they all say "I have to go to the grocery". I was forever waiting for them to say the word "store" but they never did. I would ask them if they say " I am going to the drug." or "going to the shoe." We are back near Toledo and I don't notice anyone "up" here forgetting to say the word "store" after grocery. :chuckle

How can people that live 75 miles apart have different accents and lingo???

I too live "up north" near Toledo and just recently visited Greenville about an hour south of Lima and it was like a whole different world down there. Don't get me wrong, everyone was nice, but they all had accents.

BTW, I have also heard green peppers called Mango's

I grew up in Norwood/Cincy and loved it. Then we moved to central IL, and now Eastern NC, and it sucks. I miss home. I am a vegetarian now, but skyline chili ROCKS. I fiend it all the time and make my own semi-decent version at home. I also eat about 50 Frisch's fish sandwiches (extra tarter, no bun) every time I get over that way. I really want to move back.

And does anyone else say the word "bag" as "beg", like my entire So Ohio family and I do? There are other things, but I pretty much do everything mentioned so far, except the pronunciation of "warshington". ;)

And my southern ohio "drawl" comes out full force when I'm in OH and KY. My dh thinks that it's hilarious. But when I go to the deep south, I truly can't understand a word people are saying. It's funny because most people in IL don't have accents, and they put me in speech for a year before they decided they couldn't "fix" my accent. Lol!

I grew up in Northern Kentucky, about 3 miles from Cincinnati (could see the skyscraper lights from Cincy at night from my bedroom window), but that was decades ago... I like the way they say WARSHington, instead of "Washington" or WARSH your clothes, etc. Have been down in NC and Southern VA since I was 18. I now live in Eastern NC and actually love it here. Couldn't imagine living anywhere else. When I go back home now to visit it is soooo overgrown and all the woods are disappearing! There are even min-skyscrapers in Northern Kentucky! I too miss Frisches, Skyline Chili, and Whitecastles!

LOL! Reading through this thread has brought back so many memories:

Mango pepper - Yes, I agree - That's what we called green peppers.

Always ended a sentence with a preposition - What are you looking at?

Pitcher for "picture"

Pocket book for "purse"

Yes, we always said "please" for "What did you say?" LOL

The only spaghetti sauce I knew was chili.

A few other expressions we used:

Ice box for "freezer"

Scotch tape or sticky tape

Sposed or susposed for "supposed" :)

No that is absolutely wrong I live on Route *** Not Root *** it sounds so wrong to say Root when you are talking about a road :chuckle

No, roads are definetely roots here.

This is a funny thread. Except or 4 or so years that I lived in Maryland, I've always been in SW Ohio. I didn't realize that we supposedly have an accent until I moved to MD and got made fun of for it. I had trouble thinking of their town Bowie (pronounced Bow ee here) as Boo ee as they pronounced. Instead of Towson being Toe son they pronounce it Tou (as in the ow sound in ouch) son.

I do drink pop but carry a purse and warsh drives me nuts. I'm continually guilty of the 'please' thing when I don't understand what's said. I do say y'all and love chili spaghetti but can't stand the 'cincinnati style' chili. Most of my enunciation is correct as I'm the daughter of an elementary school teacher who insisted on it. I go to either Krogers or to the store.

My daugher goes to OSU and her boyfriend is from Cleveland. To me, he has a heavy accent. We were in Arkansas one time at a Wallyworld. Some guy came up to my daughter and me and said, "I thought I heard a yankee around here."

I think some of the things like warsh come from Kentucky. I have family in very rural areas in KY and pronunciations like that are quite common in places there.
