Need a better paying job in Colmbus OH

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hi guys!

My husband works for a hospital in Columbus and makes $23, day shift.

I thought as a RN (ASN working towards BSN) he can make more money

but I am wrong so far. We have to increase his salary quickly due to

family's finance needs.

The one thing I should mentioned is that he doesn't need benefit.

Mine is pretty good and covers him.

Here is his SPEC, do you think he can find a better pay job? if so

where and what type of RN job he should check first?

Male, 45, 3 years experience, no need benefit, prefers day shift/week day.

We are hoping to find a job pays $30/hr

Thanks

May I ask what hospital he works for? I live in Cleveland and thought about moving down to Columbus but not if that is what they are paying for someone with 3 years experience.

For those specifications (days-Monday through Friday) with 3 years experience in Ohio? Good luck. Maybe if your husband is willing to work another shift, plus weekends and holidays the differential might equal $30 an hour.

Many times, benefits are optional, so he could decline those and not take deductions.

Overall, jobs working day shift Monday-Friday are typically not your highest paying jobs. Nurses in our hospital take a significant cut in pay when they transfer from a floor to an outpatient M-F job although both are considered clinical, hospital jobs.

Hubby needs to network in your specific area to find out if $30 an hour with his experience, education, and job requirements are even a possibility. Only then will you have your exact answer. Good luck to you both.

23 is about average for a floor nurse in my area of Ohio. Nursing isn't a field to get rich in. 30 dollars an hour is really kind of unheard of in my area unless the person has a lot of experience and was usually hired in under different raise policies than are currently in place.

If he applies at different hospitals, he might be able to swing a few more dollars an hour but I doubt it would be a seven dollar increase, especially with RNs willing to work for cheaper to be on the day shift. At hospitals around me, they start NPs at 34 dollars an hour. Correctional starts out at 24 or 25.

Maybe after he gets his BSN he may be able to become a manager and he would make more money per hour. I know one hospital paid about 30-34 dollars for RNs who worked weekend options but those were the only hours they work. I don't think they hire for the weekend option anymore though due to the increase in RNs.

New grads at Cleveland Clinic start at $25. I think that is the same at Metro. UH pays a little higher to new grads, like $2-3 more. They all have shift differential as well. I do know that the Columbus area hospitals start a little lower than they do here in Cleveland. Plus I think it is also cheaper to live up here. Just wanted to give you a different point of view.

hi, i'm not sure if he would be interested in this type of work, but i found work for a major insurance company here in columbus doing case management/utilization review nursing, and they start at around 33 bucks an hour. most require 3 years experience. there are several insurance companies here in columbus, i would recommend looking into it. it's normal hours and much less stress than bedside, plus nearly all of them transition to work at home after a certain amount of time.

Sarah, how do you like case management? I'm burnt out with direct pt care right now and am looking to relocate to central ohio. I was looking at some utilization review/case management jobs with Aetna but I have no exp is those specialities. Did you have CM exp prior to getting the job? Thanks!

i didn't have experience! i had 5 years of claims review experience before i became an RN, and not very much RN experience before i got the job i have now. bedside nursing wasn't for me at all, unfortunately, and i am VERY thankful to have gotten the job i am in now. i found the listing on indeed.com and applied, and two weeks later i got an offer. keep applying until you find the right spot for you, the industry is growing :)

HM3-2-BSN, it won't let me reply to you in a message because i haven't had enough posts yet on allnurses, so i'll give you the info here :) from what i can tell, most of the companies here in columbus are all pretty equivalent in terms of pay and benefits. in columbus we have aetna, united healthcare, molina, humana, and quantum health, and possibly more that i'm not thinking of. i would check their individual websites too, not all of them post jobs on the job sites like indeed and monster. good luck to you! i wish sometimes that i had spent more time working directly with patients, but i was completely miserable and questioning every choice i had ever made that led me to nursing LOL. this is so much better, i am so happy and i feel like myself again. zero regrets. good luck!

just so you know, now is a really good time to look at insurance companies for RN positions, everyone is prepping for the first quarter. the company i work for does their big hire in october in preparation for january.

Sarah are these companies willing to hire without UR experience? I have tons of hospital experience, but zero experience with claims review or case management. I am looking for a change, and am interested in UR, are they willing to train? Thanks!!

As a new grad nurse 2 years ago in Columbus with only my ADN, all hospitals paid better than $23/hr base....
