Tom Cruise on Postpartum depression

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Can you believe the comments Tom Cruise made on the Today show about Brooke Sheilds and her PPD, and her use of medication to treat it?!:angryfire What the heck does he know about it? I say if a woman is suicidal and visualizing her infant hitting a wall, she needs medication and counseling. I think it was very irresponsible for him to go on national television and criticize women who use medication to help them out in such a difficult time in their lives. I've never experienced PPD, only the regular "Baby Blues" and I must say during that time I wasn't able to control my emotions (esp the tears:crying2: ) and i've never been that way before. Shame on Tom...... and Kudos to Brooke for getting help.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

This subject was debated/discussed rather heatedly and turned into a slamfest on Scientology. I am not a Scientologist, but I draw the line when people start disrespecting others' religious beliefs with blanket statements and little education or personal experience/understanding to back them up.

That said, I think Tom should stick to acting. He is mediocre at best IMO, but he is a better actor than health care expert.

You must have seen a rerun of that show. Ugh. To think they're still playing that garbage segment of the Today Show. :smackingf

TOTALLY agree! By the way, would anyone agree that Tom's latest behavior is awfully reminiscent of the manic phase of Bipolar disorder? I mean the frantic pace of his relationship with Katie, the public antics on different tv shows ... and last but not least the vigor with wich he flames about psychiatry and psych meds ....it kinda makes me think that someone was trying to convince him that he needs treatment...

Hmmm, interesting thought, estrogen. I'll file that thought away.

I just finished my psych rotations and I didn't catch this, good eye.

Tom's "church", the Church of Scientology, was declared a cult in England. (For this useage of cult, I mean an organization whose primary purpose is declared to be recruiting new members and fundraising). I will probably get flamed, but this little fact cheers me up and makes me feel better about his remarks.

Specializes in ER/ICU/STICU.

I agree with everyone. He is an actor and he should stick with it. Why does it seem that just because people are celebrities with money, they become this all knowing person that knows what is good for everyone? Does anyone else thinks this about them?

one word synonym for Tom on PPD: IDIOT

Specializes in obstetrics(high risk antepartum, L/D,etc.

I not only take exception to him "practicing medicine" but I wish he would stop being so rude as to haul himself, and others over the back of a couch and stand on the seat. I wont even mention jumping up and downon it.

If I had ever had any respect for him, it is now gone. :angryfire :twocents: :deadhorse :sofahider :nono: (I think this is enough icons. )

What is very interesting to me is that Mr. Cruise is making these judgements about a woman publicly having never gone through the experience of supporting a wife through the childbirth and postpartum period himself. He and Nicole Kidman ADOPTED 2 children, did they not?

How shameful. Women don't seek help in high enough numbers as it is, and we need to encourage women to get the help they need.

Interestingly enough, I read an article that stated depression is actually more common DURING pregnancy than after. A lot of women don't seek help because they're supposed to be thrilled they've having a baby, so they feel ashamed.

what really sucks the most about all this, is I wanted to go see "War of the Worlds".

but now I can't because he's such a dangerous and offensive lunatic, and I promised myself to never give him another dollar.

well, thats a great attitude, but really should only be applied to legitimate religions like Xianity, Buddhism, Islam, Wicca, various indigenous tribal religions, etc.

I'm sorry, but you dont have to give respect to cults.

scientology is truly a cult. actually, it's Organized Crime Masquerading as Religion. it's not just a ridiculous scam, but it's destructive and dangerous.

since their Mad Messiah (the paranoid-schizophrenic sci-fi hack L. Ron Hubbard) had a pathological aversion to psychiatry, the hatred of all psychiatric medicine is a key component of their beliefs.

people have become seriously ill and even died following their advice. for instance, they run a bunch of drug/alcohol treatment centers under the banner "Narconon".

these Narconon centers are really just fronts to (a) recruit new cult members and (b) launder money to keep scientology a non-profit IRS 501(b) status.

of course they adhere to all of scientology's principles. which mean people detoxing from chronic addictions to alcohol, barbituates, heroin, etc... are not given any medication, but are instead pumped full of Niacin and other vitamins. and when they go into shock and start having seizures, the Narconon-Scientologists then dump their victims off at the front door of the local ER.

of course, no insurance provider will ever cover treatment at a Narconon facility... and they arent cheap either.
