International Nurses and UK Nursing

One of the topics that is raised frequently in the UK and International forums is how does an international nurse go about working in the UK ... Nurses Announcements Archive Article

... The replies are often negative and in general try to convey how very difficult this is. There are lots of hoops to jump through and currently the economic situation in the UK is very grim, this means that jobs anywhere are scarce and our government is trying to keep UK citizens in work, therefore making obtaining a work visa more difficult.

Before even being considered an international nurse will need to gain UK registration, this is done via the Nursing and Midwifery council, this organisation has the responsibility to register and regulate all registered nurses and midwives in the UK. The http://nmc-uk.org is very informative and will give you information about what you will need to do to register, as well as details of the code of conduct, and other documents that structure our practice in the UK

The booklet which informs international nurses of what is needed to register can be found here

The register is divided into 4 different parts

  1. Adult
  2. Mental Health
  3. Child
  4. Learning disabilities

Before your application is processed you will have to pay an administration fee, and provide the required documents, this will include evidence of you passing the ILETS (the minimum score accepted is and average of 7)

You should have been practising as a nurse for at least 12 months, and if you have been qualified longer than this then you must have done at least 450 hours in the last 3 years.

There are also some specific requirements to register as a nurse in the UK, these can be found on the NMC website.

You will also have to complete and Overseas Nursing Program (ONP) with supervised practice days before you are allowed to register.

Before then being able to work in the UK you will need a work VISA as no Employer within the UK is legally allowed to consider you for work without one, as employers we are legally obliged to give work to citizens of the UK then EU first and only if the positions cannot be filled from here are we allowed to consider overseas applicants.

You are only able to apply for a VISA if you have sponsorship from a UK employer, and although the Immigration and VISA has been changed to a points based system it is actually designed to make it more difficult for international applicants to get work.

Nursing is no longer considered as a shortage occupation, unless you have significant experience in areas such as critical care or theatre specialities at a very senior level. (Band 7 and above)

If you take a look at the Borders Agency Website you can see that overseas nurses and midwives are listed as Tier 2 and will only be considered if you already have a job offer from an employer.

There have been some discussions on the international areas about studying and working in the UK, this is covered by different immigration regulations so I will address this in a different blog.

Does anyone know if a RPN can work in the UK? If they can what is their qualification recognized as?

Thanks

Check the NMC website, it'll depend on your education and clinical hours in training. If its tiniest to the US LPN then I would say no.

Hi! Can someone pls help me because I have an employer from UK and I need to know if this is real. He said he will process my visa and work permit in UK and from what I understand I need to pay for the work permit first so I can have my visa. Is that true? The 400 pounds work permit fee is very big for me, I don't want to waste money for that if it's fake.

This is his message:

"Listen now, on your visa application forms they required your working permit number.Mallinson will process your visa and working permit same time together.British Labour Department will approve your working permit first before issue visa.

I am your employer and i am the one who will guide you on how to procure your documents to avoid any problem. You will follow all my instruction if you are willing to work for me.I have told you all the procedures and you must comply to ensure you have all your documents on time. You are not in England and you haven't travel to Europe or England. This is England procedures. You have to secure working permit registration number first before they will approve your visa.

Hope you understand?"

I have been considering looking into international nursing after I complete my master's degree to become a family nurse practitioner in 2014. I finished an accelerated program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2010 and now work as a BSN, RN on an adult general medicine unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (liver failure, pulmonary failure, renal failure, pre-transplant). Would it still be impossible for me to register with the NMC (given that I attended an accelerated program) even after several years as a nurse and an advanced degree? I understand that education is important, especially if you are a new graduate, but do they weigh education as heavily for experienced nurses? The accelerated program I attended was 18 months but we completed the same number of clinical and theory hours as the normal undergraduate population. I would love to work at King's College Hospital as they have a very good liver treatment department, but I suppose that's ridiculous given what I've read. Thank you.

This is something that you really need to ask the NMC

Sorry just curious is this program similar to NZ nursing council?

Thanks for the informative article. Does anyone know if after completing the overseas nurses program and given a PIN by the NMC, would our RN status be considered "permanent"? Or is there any kind of probationary period involved. The reason I ask is, after receiving licensure in the UK, would a nurse who received licensure outside the EU be then entitled to apply for licensure in other EU countries?

Any responses would be helpful, Thanks.

Hi there, there are some universities that offer courses to international students, you'd need to look at their websites to find out what type of courses they are

Hi Sharrie,

I am a Registered Nurse in the Philippines with 7 months nursing experience. Obviously, I did not satisfy the 12 months criteria. Is it possible that the NMC will have you take courses in lieu of lack of nursing experience? thank you and hope to hear from you

Hi Louise, the NMC requires 12 months experience, I don't think they will waive this
