Aminophylline 300 mg in 500 mL D5W to be infused over 8 hours. You have: Aminophylline 500 mg/ 10ml. How many mls of Aminophylline should be added to the bag of D5W?

PLEASE show the correct way of solving/understanding this? It has beena while since I have done these calcs. Thanks!

I haven't calculated an IV for many years, but saw two different ways to calculate it in my head.

what do you think it may be, and how did you arrive there?

ok here goes

ordered= 300mg/500ml

have= 1000mg/20 ml

but since all 4 numbers are given Im having a hard time understanding how plugs into the desired over have equation.

500/8hours=62.5

62.5/20=3.125ml

500mg per 10ml and want 300mg

500x=300

0.6 x 500=300

So 0.6x10=6ml I'm pretty confident 6ml would be your answer. I don't remember proper calculations we were taught in nursing school, but it makes sense to me. I always clarify every dose calculation with pharmacy. If you do a rough check of your work you can compare it to what 250mg would be which in your head you can calculate as 5ml. So 6ml sounds right.

And doing it for them helped them learn how?

Simplify:

Aminophylline 300 mg to be given.

You have: Aminophylline 500 mg/ 10ml. How many mls of Aminophylline should be added to the bag of D5W?

The size of the bag is irrelevant. The qty of aminophylline is the same whether it's 250 cc of fluid, or 2 liters

The correct answer was given above

Also, don't get caught up on your dilution. You know your adding the drug to the dilution, so you leave that out. You will add the 6ml of drug to your 500ml of D5W.

And doing it for them helped them learn how?

but only one of the two answers above you was right. :sarcastic:

Thanks to all who really put it in perspective. It has been 3 years since I really practiced dose calcs. And sometimes the extra numbers throw me off. It plugs into the equation perfectly I just have to focus and not get sidetraked by other impertinent info in the problem.

Thanks Imadoll1980 you really are a doll. Thank you all!

Then maybe you need to brush up. Dosage calculation problems WILL be a normal part of your everyday life as a nurse. You WILL be consistently sidetracked as a nurse giving meds. Now you need to learn to focus.
