Best shoe to wear in nursing school for clinical and after?

Hello!

I start nursing school in May and I was wondering if you all could suggest a great shoe for clinical rotations? We do a 1000 clinical hours so I am guessing I will be on my fit quite a bit. Thanks for the feedback!

I just bought a pair of Danskos. I was told they start off kind of hard (which I'm currently experiencing) and have to be broken in but after that they'll last for years an are ultimately the most comfortable of them all from what I "hear" ha.

I wear an 8.5 and was told to get a 39 (euro size) my pinky finger should be able to fit between my heel an the back of the shoe because they aren't made to fit snug. I'm starting school January 7th :) an our dress code is strictly white shoes, close toe no designs so I had to get boring, white, ugly ones lol

I would suggest shoe shopping at the end of the day so you can have an idea of how much your feel naturally swell during the day so you don't end up buying shoes that are too narrow or small by the end of the day. I'm a huge Dansko fan and would suggest trying on a few pairs in the size you need since they can vary slightly due to being hand made. Sure they're pricey, but when you calculate how much you'll wear them it comes out to pennies per wear.

Besides the shoe (I chose a comfortable pair of New Balance sneakers with a separate squishy insole), the most important thing to get and use are TED HOSE STOCKINGS!!! I guarantee if you try the hose, you will never not use them when you are on your feet every day for long periods of time. Best of luck in school!!

(Forgot to mention: I have a friend who spent over $250 on a pair of sneakers sized and shaped to his feet and he said they were horrible!! He went back to a pair of New Balance sneaks with insoles (he refused to wear the hose, though! Said his "leg hair would itch"....ultimately, admitting he had tried them! Hehehe!!)

Socks are important. Get some mix blend socks - not all cotton, all cotton is rough on your skin!

If you have to wear the typical white leather shoes for school, grasshoppers ($50) are very comfortable, but now that I'm working and can wear whatever I want, I love my merrells ($85). They've lasted me longer than my danskos, are very comfortable, and look better too.

I was wondering about merrels, I love that brand, I bet they are really great to wear.

I like Sketchers. Have had one pair for 3 yrs & just bought a 2nd pair in the past 6 months. No break in time & my feet have never hurt. I did get some knee length compression hose a few months ago thinking I would be proactive & prevent future problems. Wore them once & my legs hurt soooo bad! Forget that! May try a different type of stocking or full length pantyhose in the future if I start having issues, but so far I never have trouble with foot or leg pain.

love my danskos & that's all i will wear to work that doesn't hurt my feet.

I use Dansko's ... they come with orthotics built in. Also, invest in some TED hose/pressure stockings and comfy, somewhat thick ankle socks. If you go with Dansko's or any thick shoes like them, you want some cushion between your ankles and the shoe. Otherwise it might rub against them.

I adore my Klogs! They are light and comfortable, and can be washed with any type of wipe that you want, no fabric to worry about.

It is also good to have more than one pair/style of shoes so you don't wear the same ones every day, that way pressure is put on different areas.

I love bamboo socks - they are light and help keep my feet cool and dry!

I swear by Sanita clogs...they work the best for me. However, you need to find the best fit for you.

To achieve the best fit, might I suggest having your feet sized by a professional? I made the mistake of buying the shoe size I thought I was (38) until I was measured by a professional, who informed me I was actually a size 39.

The comfort difference was immediately obvious. My feet, back and hips no longer ached at the end of a shift.
