Welcome, Welcome,Welcome to a new member from a different country! I am from Australia and love meeting folks from around the world!!

Thanks! It is amazing how people get to know each other in different countries.

I'm not currently working in PR but 4 years ago I worked as an RN in PR and let me tell you it was hell! I worked in Mayaguez for 7 months 5 night shifts a week for 6.63/hr. I had 19 patients under my care and one NA, oh, did I mention I was doing chemos, blood transfusions and taking care of post - surg pts all at the same time? I got burned out, moved to MI for an MA in Psychology trying to get away from nursing, graduated, couldn't find a job as a psych so got my NCLEX, worked in a clinic for a few months and found it soooooo boring.... now I'm a missionary in Korea. My contract expires in Dec so I'll be going back to nursing. I'm trying to get into ICU or ER so I can get an MS in ACNP. I'm pretty much scattered all over right? Anyways, it might be helpful if you share with me what you think of nursing in PR(how it is now) and Fla.

Thanks!

Does anybody knows if there's a forum for nursing in Puerto Rico on the web?

I am in Tennessee, but I want to go to Nursing School in Puerto Rico. My knowlegde of Spanish is minimal. I want to know if any of the universities down there have classes in English or are they in Spanish? I am hoping to find a school that has a program in English so that I can do well in them and then also work on my Spanish as I interact in daily life. My main goal is to provide healthcare to Hispanics. Do you have any info?

Denise-"Dancie"

Well Dancie, It's great to hear that you want to go to nursing school to PR. You are going to be more than welcome and you'll love it. All I can tell you is from where I graduated. I went to the University of Puerto Rico, there are different campuses throught the island. Nursing is in spanish but books are in english, and they use the books a lot!! There is a web site that you can go online and get some info.

This is the web site for Mayaguez Campus http://www.uprm.edu/ac/

This is the web site for all the campuses the have that belongs to UPR http://www.upr.clu.edu/unidades.htm

Hope you find it helpful. Good luck. PM me if any further questions

Hi All,

Glad to see some nurses from PR in here! I want to move back to PR once I'm done with all of my school here in Michigan. I read in one of the earlier posts that conditions weren't so good. How is it in the other parts of Puerto Rico?

I was thinking of moving to an area that had some American population like San Juan to help my wife get acclimated to the culture, the maybe moving to Ponce or somewhere on the southern coast.

All replies are welcome!!!

Thanks,

Alex

Hey Dancie, You won't find an English Univ. but that's good cause if you wanna work with hispanics you wanna learn the language. I know many people from USA that go to PR for Nursing school since it's so cheap, they learn Spanish and do well in their classes, usually within the first year they're already speaking Spanish. I went to Antillean University in Mayaguez. It was great. There's so many people from USA! It's a small Univ. with about 800 students but it has about 99% PR boards pass rate. I took the Kaplan review and passed the NCLEX the 1st time THANK GOD! So I totally recommend it. You can get your BSN there in 3 years if you do summers and it's accredited.
