Nurses Criminal

Published

Ok, so I have been lurking and posting for years in fear of NEVER getting into nursing schoo-which I did...then, wondering IF I would ever get licensed-which I did..and then wondering IF I would ever find a job-WHICH I did. I was arrested almost 18 years ago for posession of a controlled substance-meth..and something with my car tags. false tags. I pled not guilty but ended up doing a diversion program and then in exchange, I would not be charged with the offense. I was arrested and that record will never be any different, but I was not charged due to the program. I am in california and have been an oncology nurse at a wonderful hospital in OC. I am truly so grateful that my mistake hasn't ruined my life and my career. I hope that you all keep chugging away and get licensed as well...Good luck to all of you..:) Oh, and be HONEST with the BON..It is a MUST..

Thank you!!!!! What an awesome success story. I am definitely not giving up and going for it now!!! Nothing is stopping me

Wow! Thanks for sharing your story!

I would like to share my own story because when I got into a mess I read so many post that lead me to believe there wasn't hope. About a year into Nursing school I got a theft charge. I had never been in trouble in my life and prided myself on what a good citizen I am.. .lol I had stopped and picked up 13 bricks from the edge of town that had been sitting for years and were covered in dirt and grass. I thought it was a shame and sought to make something of them. I was going to make a flower bed in my back yard. It was the middle of the day and my actions were out in the open. A police man came by and said that the bricks were the cities and charged me with theft. I felt my world was over and after reading everyone's post on message boards was certain of it! Eventually the charge was dismissed and I had the charge expunged. Again the internet and persistent Googling led me to believe just having a charge made me hopeless and even though it was expunged the board would see it.

Happy Ending - The board never saw my charge! It didn't even show up on the FBI and BCI background check. I received my Approval To Test and an offer for a great job before I was even licensed in Ohio.

If God put it on your heart to be a nurse then you should be a nurse. Pray about and take the legal steps you can to make good on your actions and God will see you through!!

did you report this to the BON, though? thank you.. good to know people make it through

I know this was posted many years ago but hopefully dylansmom you get this message. Im applying for a nursing program at nation university and like you i had a possession charge 8 years ago. I did the diversion program and it is now dismissed. I also unfortunately have a DUI that is dismissed to which is also 8 years old ( i was hanging around the wrong people). Both are expunged and was told that i just need to present my expungement paperwork if accepted by the program, which i hope i will be since i have the two incidents. Any ways my question to you is, what did they ask on the employment application when you were hired at the hospital that you work at now? Did you disclose that to them during the hiring process. Its one of those things they say that if its expunged that we can say "NO" too but i dont know how far back and how deep the hospitals go. I know for the BON i will have to send in my paperwork from the courts which is fine and by the time i graduate it'll be 10 years. All of this freaks me out because i have worked so hard and unfortunately i messed up when i was younger.

Hi guys! Great story. I also messed up about 5 years ago. I was arrested twice and did an expungement for a misdemeanor. I have run an FBI background check on myself and nothing shows up. I live in new mexico and will be finishing nursing school in July. Do I need to disclose this to the BON if nothing shows up? Did you disclose it even though it did not show up? Any help is greatly appreciated!
