I'm just curious to know, for those of you who are unemployed nurses, exactly how long have you been looking for work? What are you (LPN,RN,BSN-RN,MSN-NP,etc.) How many previous years of experience do you have? Where are you located? How many applications do you think you have placed? What about interviews? Add anything else that you want! Vent, tell us how you REALLY feel, give your opinions/outlooks on everything.

Passed NCLEX in June 2010. Can't find a new Grad job in my area. I am working in a non-nursing job but making more than a new grad RN.

Stay there..hold on to it with your LIFE. NEVER LEAVE. I envy you in the best way possible.

Do you guys mind sharing what part of the country you are from? Naming cities would be great. I've just never seen anything like what you guys are describing. I would say less than 5% of nurses I've ever worked with or observed have been foreign. By the way, are you guys including CNAs in your count? There are many more foreign (mostly latino) CNAS than RNs and LPNs combined, but still no where near the number you guys are talking about. I wonder if it's just a geographical thing. Are you guys with the high foreign rate more in the Southern part of the country or in rural areas? I can also see California having a higher foreign nurse rate.

Well I'm in NYC so that's no big surprise I guess..and nope, I only count RNs...when I say 90%+ are foreign, I'm speaking about the RNs.

I haven't read anything racist here. It's really sad when people pull the race card out, unnecessarily. Please stick to the topic and let's not start trouble.

There are a lot of really frustrated, unemployed nurses out there and allnurses is a place where they can come to vent, chat, provide hope, etc. I find it really unfair when someone starts unnecessary drama and I hope nurses can keep voicing their opinions without fear of someone making false accusations against them.

Hey I don't personally care if there're a lot of foreign nurses. I just got involved in the conversation because I think it's interesting that people say more than 50% of the nursing staff is foreign, let alone 80%. It just seems statistically impossible.

In some areas it's MORE than statistically possible..and in others, you're right, it's not true. What city do you work in btw?

Hi everyone I am an RN in NYC graduated May 2009 and have applied to over 300+ positions in just about every area. I've put in applications at hospitals, flu clinics, LTC, schools, MD offices, etc. I am currently also volunteering and this may be a dead end as well. Apparently the facility has many applicants within the hospital and not enough openings. And unfortunately volunteers are considered external candidates. It is very frustrating because I keep hearing from recruiters that I've been out of school for almost 2 years and that's a major concern for them. I've even had someone mention that its possible I don't interview well. How can I not interview well if no one will give me a chance to interview??...

I've had 3 total interviews, one had no positions to offer me, and the second was looking for someone with experience. The third is my most recent and I am currently trying to follow up. I was supposed to receive a second interview and as my luck would have it the person was ill. So I am currently trying to get in touch with them but no one has returned my calls. I feel as though I may be losing out on another opportunity.

While attending nursing school I was working as a PCP on a med surg floor and was supposed to be given first dibs on an RN position. At the time I mentioned to management my interest in a position and was told to put in an application and follow up with recruitment; which I did. After the first interview (with recruitment) I went to speak with management regarding the position only to literally watch a fellow classmate (not a current employee) walk out of her office. It was then that my boss told me she had just offered the "last" position and put blame on me because I took too long to put in an application. In my defense I was one of the few of my classmates working and attending classes so I had scheduling conflicts. That was probably the worse burn I've ever felt and even now because as I look back I realize that was the closest chance I had at getting into the nursing field...

Regardless I have no choice but to keep working at it. I just needed to vent. I wish everyone all the best. I've been told this has happened in the nursing field before. So we just have to have faith and ride this out. Good luck guys.;)

What a slap in the face. I cannot believe you're coming up on almost 2 years and haven't been employed yet...not that I'm saying it's your fault..but I am just disgusted at the way nursing is going. I openly admit, on these threads, that I'm a Licensed Practical Nurse...did it that way on purpose and rejected my acceptance into a RN program in order to get my feet wet first. I just refused to dedicate so much time and so much money to a degree that wouldn't at least open up SOME doors for me.

I think you have an awesome attitude about it. You've done everything by the book and I am amazed that it still hasn't increased your chances. Funny enough..I can't even find a place that wants to take me as a volunteer nurse! So in all honesty, I'm not going to volunteer my services for free. I rather work at Starbucks and be paid to make coffees than pimp myself out. No offense to you at all...I respect what people want to do..that's just the way I think of it! Can't believe some of you guys went to school for 4-6 years only to feel lucky enough to just volunteer somewhere..busted butt to get into a nursing program and graduate with a Bachelors..only to work for free.

I agree with you Bree, it was something I thought may help me work my way in. But I don't think I will be doing it much longer. I think your are better off trying to get any position you can at a hospital so that you have more access to any openings. But at least you'll be getting paid for it.

I get what you mean. I'm applying everywhere right now. Not even worried about landing a hospital position. I just need to work full-time for more than $20/hr. Money is money...so long as it's legal, I don't care where it's coming from any longer. I just can't see myself holding on to hopes for more than a year. You're patient.
