Call-in days

Nurses Safety

Published

I would like to know how many call-in days nurses at other facilities get. At my facility we get 1 call-in per 6 months. This seems outrageous to me and it's unsafe. We work in a place where people are already sick and when the nurses are sick too it makes for a very dangerous situation. Besides that, you're not going to be able to do your job very well if you feel like crap. Now, you can call in for multiple days on one call-in but past 2 you need a doctor's excuse. Also, if you have a weekend or a scheduled day off and you called in the day before and the day after it counts as 2 separate occurrences. How is it at other facilities?

we get 3 call off days per year.. i call off when i am sick or occansionally need a mental health day.. and they can write me up or what ever they want but i don't go to work when i am sick.. i work in a major hospital.. your place sounds as bad as mine...

I believe we get sick time hours based on how many hours we work, it works out to about 1 per month if you work full time. They accrue, so if you ever need surgery or get very ill, you can be paid out sick time until you come back. If you have used your sick time but call in, they usually allow it, but if it is abused the management will keep track and talk to you about it.

I believe that we do not have a set number we also accrew sick time. I have called in 2x this month already. Once someone covered a half shift b/c my daughter had lice ewwww and I needed to disinfect, then on Tue my daughter had Influ A and my hubby's dad was having quad bypass so I had to stay home w/ her.

At one job I was fired.......laying in a hospital bed after an open lap for endometriosis. My charge nurse came to my bed in the hospital and told me it's not your work, you've exceeded the 3 days a year sick time off. Unbelievable. And it was Nurses day/week whatever.:nurse:

we get three "occurances." if i go home from work early with a migraine, that's an "occurance," even if i only took two hours off. when i injured my back and was off six months, that was an occurance. this has resulted in folks coming to work sick so they don't get more than their 3 occurances and jeopardize their raise. stupid policy!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! That is not a nice thing for her to have done. When I requested time off from a job I just recently left (a week ago...house keeping at my school) I had surgery a week ago, I knew for about 2 weeks that I needed it. I gave in the time off request as soon as I could, the day after I found out I needed it. My bosses response, "But we need you".

Then after the surgery I can not do any heavy lifting, or to much bending. So I told my boss this and she said it would be best if I did not work there anymore. Not sure if I actually quite or was fired. But I do not work there anymore because of my surgery.

Policy is policy.....until "management" decides what is best for them. I'd say you were let go for medical termination by the sounds of your post, which in MN is illegal. Doesn't it just make you feel like you are a bad person? For what?

People never cease too amaze me, I end up thinking, what if this happened to you.... That was the first and only job I was fired from. I did have an issue with a place of employment, thank God they were unionized.

Take Care.

I am assuming you were responding to me here...if not sorry for misunderstanding.

Yes I think I was let go for medical reasons. Which, I believe, is also illegal in MA. She told me to "come back in a month when I can do my job again." However, if she is going to make me feel guilty when I ask for time off, I am not sure if I WANT to work for her. Also with me you never know when I am going to need anther surgery. A month ago I had 6 days notice. The surgery I had about a week ago I had 2 weeks. I have had 2 weeks in the past. USUALLY I have a longer period of time that I know it is coming, usually a month or so, but sometimes I need one FAST and it can't wait. My health is ALWAYS going to come before a job. They may not like it but it is what I need to do.

Hi Meg,

Yep, I was responding to you, sorry about that. And I agree with you, YOUR health is more important. I wish I had that as a mantra earlier on.

I wish you rest, recovery and speedy healing! Hang in there, I know it's tough.:crying2:

I wish I had it as a mantra earlier. I have been very stupid with my health. Not in the way that most people my age are, I do not do things like do drugs, sleep around, drink, or smoke. I do things like, ignore symptoms, or push myself to hard. Even this last surgery, I had it on Friday the 22nd and I went on a choir tour Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th. I regretted it, and I have done similar things before. It takes me a while to learn, but I am slowly getting the picture.
