Your thoughts on Max Savings for Nclex-RN exams in Hong Kong

World Philippines

Published

Hi! Greetings of Peace to all of you! I would like to ask the Filipinos who have already taken the nclex-rn exams and those who have valid, reliable&verifiable info on the latest travel and accommodation perks, what is the cheapest way to get the exams? By saying the cheapest way, I am referring to what is the best method to save on the travel and accommodation?

What airline company offers the lowest rate for trip to HK? How much is the cheapest offer available at present? future(and when)?

What is the nearest hotel to the exam site? The second nearest? 3rd? 4th? 5th? 6th? 7th? 8th? 9th? 10th? Please explain how far/near are these hotels from the test site?

How much do these nearby hotels costs?

What is the best hotel that offers the best value for your money with reference to distance to the test site and price of accommodation/fee for accommodation?

Are there travel agencies in manila and bacolod that can offer airfare, accommodation for a packaged/discounted rate? How much am I going to pay? How long is the stay? If the venue/accommodation where they would place me is far from the test site, will they offer free travel service to the test site?

What agency in manila and bacolod offers the best rate and value(services)at present?

Please help me. Thanks.

Thanks kathykaye!:nuke:

Do you also know of a more specific map(s) which should be used when I'd go to HK to take the nclex exam?

I got an eligibility letter from CA, I think I'd have it processed for ATT next, hehehe...I see, really? So do mean I can't do it online? But Suzanne advised me to do it by mail(when accuracy is at stake and I'd have to let another person do it for me, because I don't have credit card)...A friend of mine/classmate of mine in a review class who also got his eligility from CA, and now has ATT told me that I can apply online(he had a relative do it for him), scheduling would come after ATT and that is what you meant I suppose, right?

I see, so that would be from monday to saturday right?

When I get scheduled, will the schedule be final? I'm asking these questions so that I can carefully plan my travel and time allowance there.

I see, so 10 examinees at a time in HK...Thank you very much kathykaye...May God bless you!

there is a direction at pearsonvue website on how you can get to the testing center..

i register at pearsonvue website last april 28 ($200 credit card).. after a while, they send the ATT through my email address and i scheduled my appointment for NCLEX-RN exam immediately by calling the the number of NCLEX candidate services ($150 credit card) (office hours-M-F)..

you can reschedule anytime by calling them.. no charge..

if you already have your eligibility letter from CA and if you think youre ready to take the exam.. u should register to pearsonvue.. validity period of ATT (CA) is i think 365 days... goodluck.. god bless..

Wow, another 500 hk dollars? Indeed, I'm on a tight budget myself, hehe, how about if you pay the hotel fees in advance? Is deposit still required?
yes. you'll still need HK$500 or a valid credit card.

I went there on a fully-paid for package. nothing to pay for anymore. so I was surprised when the receptionist asked for my credit card, or HK$500.

so don't forget this, or you can't check into your hotel.

added stress before the NCLEX!

:D

Chinese food is okey with me(supposing it is similar to Chinese restaurants here in the Philippines)...I see, is fair wood near the exam site? where is it located? Hehe, I hope their Nai Cha/Milk tea is not as bitter as chowking's...hehehe...
there are lots of Fair Wood restaurants there...I think they're connected to the Fair Wood Malls or something.

I was too distracted by my exam to ask. :D

I knew about this place only because my HK package included meals at this restaurant, and the food is good.

I haven't tried the Chowking version, so can't say.

I see, thank you for giving me precautions in advance; so local foods there might not be healthy...hmmm, or perhaps just because our stomach got new food?
well, the place is generally cleaner over there.

I'm not sure why my friend had stomach problems. bad luck with spoiled food? too much spices in their food? nervousness?

McDo and Pizzahut would do me fine, hehe, especially Pizzahut for a heavy meal...but how much do they charge food and drinks there? How does it compare to our rates here?
I only ate at McDonald's.

The food is a little more expensive, add around P5 to P10 per item.

I was surprised at the Upsize Charge--here it's P18 to upsize to large drinks & large fries; there it's HK$2, or around P14.

I see, so watson's is already international...and so is 7-11...But how are the prices in these shops there as compared to our rates here?
not sure about items, I didn't buy anything else; just water.

mineral water is around HK$5 for 750 cc, if I recall correctly.

I see, that is good to hear, I hope they are helpful as well...I see, okey, so communication won't be much of a problem there...Yeah, I remember, HK used to be a British colony right?
helpful...depends.

some Cantonese people in Kowloon shops were still rude. I asked about something, and they tried to push a different item on me. when I said thanks but I'm interested in the item I'm looking for, the shop people were talking like they were cursing or something for wasting their time.

the hotel people, and the staff of Ocean Park, were helpful & nice though.

I see, really?! How hot? How does it compare to Philippine heat nowadays? Even at the last quarter(I'm planning to get my nclex somewhere around this time)? So jackets are least likely to be used? Do they not have winter there? Is it also raining there often?
very hot.

enough to give you a headache. hot that I didn't feel like walking outdoors under the sun. hot that it'll spoil Disneyland or Ocean Park.

rain...depends, if no typhoon, no rain generally... :D

Any other things that must be known or brought at hk for the nclex test?
ATT & Signed Passport!

take out all the papers in your passport when you put your things inside the locker--especially the Embarkation Card! you'll only be allowed to enter the Exam Room with the Locker Key & your Passport.

ask for the disposable ear plugs. they help tune out the click-clack of the other examinees fidgeting with their keyboards.

Hehe, I'm not yet ready. I still need mentoring from Suzanne. She is the best reviewer here that offers free service.

When I would have work in the US, I'm going to give something to her, a material symbol of my gratitude(though I know it will never be enough but somehow, I just want to express it in tangible form)...And I'm going to help her more in her quest of helping others, the would be US nurses.

Yup, thanks. God bless too on your exams!

Tell me your experiences when you finish the nclex.

Hmmm, when are you taking the exam by the way? Are you going there alone or in a group?

How did you arrange your travel?

Really?! Did you report that to your travel agency? Hehe, added stress indeed, but is there nothing we could do to prevent this? What agency did you get your travel package by the way?

I see, okey, hehe, then I will try that place when I get there. I believe that is near the exam site right?

From what I see, the cebu pacific package looks promising but when you count more savings, why did they not tie up with the newly constructed hotel(lan kwai fong hotel ) that you mentioned earlier?

When I compared the hotel rate, considering the distance(and that cebu pacific just has one way shuttle service to the exam site), I'm contemplating that I just arrange for a plane fare with cebu pacific(not with the package but I might change my mind later)then have the hotel at lan kwai fong...5-10mins walk is just like staying in Crowne Garden Hotel(though there is a nearer one than that but the nearer one got so full/booked last nov 2005 when I took and failed my cgfns exam, so I just stayed in that hotel) in cebu when you take the cgfns exam in cebu...I believe that is the better choice...Or maybe I should suggest to cebu pacific right that they tie up with that hotel in HK? Hehehe...

Yeah, I tried that tea from there, hehe, it's not good believe me(unless you want to drink something bitter)...The black gulaman tastes better(sweet).;-)

I see, yes, I believe other factors have caused that stomach upset...I hope I won't have body ailments in the duration of my stay there...

I see, so, fluctuations in prices, some are cheaper, others are more expensive, but the general trend I believe is expensive right? My cousin told me when she had a vacation there that food and the cost of living in hk is quite higher than here in the Philippines...

Really? Thanks for the warning. I'll bear that in mind.

I see, so you stayed in ocean park hotel? That's nice. Thanks for sharing your experience pinoy_guy

hehe, really? So their overall environmental temperature their is hotter that here? Hehe, is disneyland near the exam site? Where is disneyland in hk located?

I see, so I'll just bring a big umbrella to protect myself against the sun or the rain(if it comes)...

Wow, thank you very much for these important things that you have mentioned pinoy_guy...

What is this embarkation card? Is this the locker key?

I see, okey, thanks. I was a bit disturbed last time when I took the toefl exam in cebu(failed the tse so I just took IELTS per advice of Suzanne and thank God I passed)...The keyboard noise from the other examinees during the twe part of toefl cbt was quite disturbing...Thank you for the precaution. Are the earplugs offered free of charge? hehehe.

Thank you very much for the detailed help that you have provided pinoy_guy...I really appreciate it...

God bless!

should we buy the hongkong dollar here or just buy one when we get there? and where in manila can we possibly get it?

should we buy the hongkong dollar here or just buy one when we get there? and where in manila can we possibly get it?
well.

I wouldn't sweat this. just make sure you have US dollars with you.

you can change currency at the HK airport, so no worries.

you can also do so in Hong Kong--I think there are money changers every 2 or 3 blocks, and their rates are slightly better than the one at the HK airport.

it's safe to use these money changers, as they're strictly regulated by the HK government.

Really?! Did you report that to your travel agency? Hehe, added stress indeed, but is there nothing we could do to prevent this? What agency did you get your travel package by the way?
the agency I got was too expensive. I would not advise people to use it. I had to use the agency because it was referred by a relative, and couldn't wiggle out of it without creating ripples.

the agent just shrugged when I told her about the HK$500 hotel deposit, she said she thought everybody knew about it.

I didn't, and I thought you guys & gals don't, that's why I posted that info here. especially for the examinees on a shoe string budget.

I see, okey, hehe, then I will try that place when I get there. I believe that is near the exam site right?
no, I stayed at Imperial Hotel, it's at the southernmost tip of Kowloon. the exam site is on Hong Kong island. no worries though, it's only a quick, convenient MTR trip away.

get the Octopus Card (or borrow one), and load it up at the MTR stations. loading is in denominations of HK$50 & HK$100. just put in the card in the slot, the LCD will show the balance, and insert the bills...presto! trips around HK$7 to HK$9 for short distances. sorry, I don't have the exact figures on this.

and yes, these MTRs work even with Typhoon Signal Number 3 hoisted all over Hong Kong. so don't worry yourself to death if a Typhoon goes with you to Hong Kong when you're scheduled for your NCLEX-RN exam.

From what I see, the cebu pacific package looks promising but when you count more savings, why did they not tie up with the newly constructed hotel(lan kwai fong hotel ) that you mentioned earlier?
yes, Cebu Pacific is supposed to be much cheaper.

I would advise people to land in HK Airport. in the last typhoon, I think some people who went via Macau could not cross the ocean coz the ferries were closed down. so I repeat: take a plane to HK Airport, especially if it's Typhoon Season. no sense being stuck in Macau when you're scheduled to take the exam. so near, yet so far.

as I mentioned, the public transportation still works even at Signal Number 3. so if you're in Hong Kong or Kowloon, you can get to the exam site.

worst case scenario, stay in Hong Kong and just hoof it to the exam site.

Hehehe...
that's what I thought too.

however, the HK MTR is very convenient. as in very convenient. so I suggest getting there 1 day early to familiarize yourselves with how to read the map (free at the airport, the Visitor's Kit), and maybe go to the exam site to check out the place. I was planning to take a few pictures for this site, but it was raining very hard when I was at the exam site, so no cigar.

Yeah, I tried that tea from there, hehe, it's not good believe me(unless you want to drink something bitter)...The black gulaman tastes better(sweet).;-)
hmmm.

I mentioned the milk tea because HK is known for this. I think the closest is at David's Tea House, but of course nothing beats getting it from the source, and it's relatively cheap to try. the allure is in the mix of bitter sweet with the creaminess of the milk and the sweetness of the sugar.

maybe it's an acquired taste. I don't like the Chowking black gulaman, too sweet for my taste.

I see, yes, I believe other factors have caused that stomach upset...I hope I won't have body ailments in the duration of my stay there...
that's why I stuck with McDonald's...

I see, so, fluctuations in prices, some are cheaper, others are more expensive, but the general trend I believe is expensive right? My cousin told me when she had a vacation there that food and the cost of living in hk is quite higher than here in the Philippines...
surprisingly, some food & clothing are the same price, or cheaper, in HK.

if you go there during their Clearance Sales, you wouldn't believe the prices. their sales are really sales. like pricing HK$99 for EVERY ITEM in the shop. meaning jeans, poloshirts, belts, everything. quite unlike sales here, where you get a measly 10% off.

I see, so you stayed in ocean park hotel? That's nice. Thanks for sharing your experience pinoy_guy
no, I stayed at the Imperial Hotel. very cramped space, but I wasn't there for the vacation.

it is very strategic though, good base to explore HK.

it's very easy to go to Ocean park, just take the MTR, then a short bus ride. everything's clean & convenient. (I think the bus ride is around HK$21.60 for round trip.)

hehe, really? So their overall environmental temperature their is hotter that here? Hehe, is disneyland near the exam site? Where is disneyland in hk located?
Disney is on another island, I think Lantau Island. maybe on the same island as the HK Airport?

you can get there via the aforementioned MTR.

I see, so I'll just bring a big umbrella to protect myself against the sun or the rain(if it comes)...
hmmm.

being a guy, I don't think it's fashionable to be walking around under an umbrella in bright sunshine and no rain. hence the headache and dehydration and general bad mood after walking around in the hot sun for hours.

:D

for women, I think umbrellas would make sense.

Wow, thank you very much for these important things that you have mentioned pinoy_guy...
I don't want the people here to make the same mistakes I did.

I originally thought of writing an article on my HK Experience, but thought better of it as this forum is not a literary showcase.

:D

What is this embarkation card? Is this the locker key?
before you land in HK, the stewardess will give you blank Disembarkation/Embarkation Cards. you fill these up in the plane.

HK Immigration will get the Disembarkation Card when you arrive. you're supposed to keep the Embarkation Card in your passport, and give it to the Airline counter personnel when you leave HK.

so when you take the NCLEX-RN, you'll have this Embarkation Card in your passport.

remember to remove this Embarkation Card from the passport and place it temporarily in your locker. you're only allowed the locker key & your passport inside the Exam Room. no other pieces of paper.

I was a bit disturbed last time when I took the toefl exam in cebu(failed the tse so I just took IELTS per advice of Suzanne and thank God I passed)...The keyboard noise from the other examinees during the twe part of toefl cbt was quite disturbing...Thank you for the precaution. yes.

they're disposable canary yellow foam earplugs. get them from the person who'll orient you and fingerprint you before you enter the exam room. the earplugs are sealed in plastic bags, so open the bag and throw the plastic into the waste can beside the Exam Door. bring just the earplugs inside.

the person will guide you to your chair and orient you. put on the earplugs after she leaves.

Thank you very much for the detailed help that you have provided pinoy_guy...I really appreciate it...

this sure helps a lot. im planning to take the next nclex-rn exam in hong kong too. im anxious because i havent travelled that far before. i hope everything will turn out ok. thnx for those who shared their experiences here. will do the same thing when im done. :)

Wow, thank you very much pinoy_guy for taking time in giving SUPER HELPFUL information to would be nclex exam takers in hk...:)

i see, so their money changing is regulated like China...

Hehe, okey, thanks...I'm sorry about your experience with that agency...But thank you for providing us this helpful information...

Hmmm, where do we get that octopus card? it's okey, hehe, you have provided us a good estimate already, a very helpful info, so please don't say sorry for any info that you don't know, you have no fault.

Hehe, yup, thanks for the tip...Hehe, too bad, we don't get to practice map reading here in the philippines right? unless of course if one belongs in the military...Yes, I will check the exam site once I'm there, thanks.

hehe, well, taste differs from each one indeed...

I see, hehe, thanks for the info on disney...

yeah, but I'd rather sacrifice fashion than comfort; ailments in hk will really have an effect on one's performance in the test...

hehe, it is okey, I guess you can post it here; but if you feel like really posting it elsewhere, you can do it on blogsites right? Just share the link to us here.

I see, thank you for the detailed info on the embarkation and earplugs...

Yes, I will pass this info to others, with the credit to you,a s the source of this info...Thank you so much pinoy_guy!

Your posts on this thread and this forum in general will really help our fellow nurses...

God bless and take care always pinoy_guy!

i see, so their money changing is regulated like china...
yes, tightly regulated. you wouldn't expect to get fake bills; if you have any problems, you can file a complaint and they will investigate.

oh, i have to say that hk paper money comes in different forms. they look very different, depending on the issuing bank.

yep, i was flabbergasted when i saw 2 different kinds of hk$100 bills.

i think they have 4 issuing banks, so expect 4 different kinds of bills for each denomination. (i'm not sure about the number of issuing banks--i asked a hk shopkeeper about this.)

the mtr reloading stations for octopus cards accept the different forms of bills with no problems.

hmmm, where do we get that octopus card?
i borrowed an octopus card from a friend.

supposedly they are available at the airport, and at mtr stations. i didn't get one, so this info is anecdotal: they are hk$150 each, and includes hk$100 load. you can surrender the card at the end & they will reimburse you the hk$50; i'm not sure if they refund the balance. i don't know where you can do this though.

too bad, we don't get to practice map reading here in the philippines right? unless of course if one belongs in the military...
it's easy, once you get the hang of it, and learn the symbols for the mtr stations.

you will be interested in 2 maps: the hong kong map (which is a large piece of glossy paper, folded) & the mtr map (which shows the mtr stops all over hk, and is in the hk visitor's kit). both are free at the airport, and in some hotels.

yeah, but i'd rather sacrifice fashion than comfort; ailments in hk will really have an effect on one's performance in the test...
good for you.

wow, so there really is a lot to know about hk before we should actually go there...i'm just thankful that pinoy_guy shares his experiences and his knowledge to us here at allnurses.com

hehe, it's the first time that i have heard of a country issuing different types of bills for a certain denomination(e.g. 4 types of 100hk dollar bills)

i see, since i have no friend who has octopus card, or has been to hk, i guess i'll be forced to get one...hmmm, how about paying per use of the mtr? is this option also available?

if so, maybe this is more expensive right than just buying the octopus card right?

does this octopus card have an expiration?

okey, i hope so...

thank you, okey i will remember to get this once i'm in the hk airport...

thank you very much pinoy_guy for all the information that you have given...

Thank you guys for sharing your experiences, I am planning to take the NCLEX-RN exam by next year (tight budget 2006). NOw I have some ideas about HK.
