Thinking twice before moving to Calgary from UK

World Canada

Published

Hi

Is there anyone from the UK planning to go to Alberta or any other province in Canada? I had a job offer from one of the hospitals in Calgary while i was on holiday there. The hospital condition is that i have to pass the RN exam and i have the choice to work as a graduate nurse( A grade) while i wait to write for the exam.

I have received a letter from CARNA ... nursing board for Alberta that i am eligible to take the RN exam soon. Now i am thinking first to go there and work as an A grade then take the exam or do the exam which is due in Oct 2008 then move there.

I wonder if there is anyone at present thinking of moving to Canada or in the process ...any suggestions or ideas welcome.

Bye

keep us all updated on your new experiences. soory to hear about your dd, but at least the health care is still free for you, so lucky that it didnt happen in florida.

you're not wrong there!!:D we didn't even have to wait too long, which i was expecting from what i'd heard!

As a Calgary male whom has welcomed many people from the UK, Dubai, Taiwan etc, allow me to state, Calgary is a great place to live and work in. You may read myanswers at allexperts.com click on ask an expert, click canada, then city Calgary. Ralph is my name. I just welcomed today a doctor whom is happy to be in safe Calgary, than her violent home city in South America.

Calgary is safer than everywhere including UK. Thats why there are a lot of British people here, because of work and free of Violence.

Good Luck with the best decision you can make, moving here to Calgary.

We're all very happy & pleased we made the move still. Especially my 16 yr old male -who seems to be a hit with the High School girls. Guess the accent is the charmer huh?:chuckle

Today is my last orientation shift - I get let loose on the Canadian public next week!:D

Hey Rebecca

Hey Ibs - I have replied to one or two threads you've written in & sent a PM or 2 - I guess it's been longer than I thought.

Today was beautiful in Calgary - the mornings & nights are colder but the days are still hanging on to that warmth. Jealous yet SD??:D Having said that it's set to be cold day Sunday. However, everyone here says that if you dress right you'll be fine.

Our friends say they've felt warmer here in -10 than they've felt in london in +10! It's such a dry cold that if you're wearing sensible clothes you'll be okay. Of course - they could be pulling my leg - although all my colleagues & the pts too have said the same - I doubt they're all in on the same joke??:chuckle

I have stacks of important info to give you before you start so please don't forget to contact me - there's loads of stuff they don't tell you & don't think you'll have any support from Helen or anyone else regarding your new to FMC status - she dissappeared off the face of the planet after I accepted the position.

Of course I'm lucky that the ward staff have been awesome but am more than peaved at some of the lack of info. So please ANYONE coming to Foothills from abroad feel free to PM me once you're here/about to land.

Just a bit, writing this on top of a electric heater as we don't want to start the big wood furnace just yet, plus waiting for it to be swept which won't be until the end of the month :( Wind and rain has been horrible today and not sure what it is going to be like the rest of the week. Bought some thermal long johns the other day in prep cos the dogs still need walking. Amazing thing is in the UK we would have had the central heating on a month already and only really been cold freezing this last week, and when walking the dogs and we get out of the wind it is still warm just the wind freezing. Over weekend we had a lot of frost but soon warmed up as the day went on but not today.

What's rain? I haven't seen any of that for such a long time I've forgotten what it looks like!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: :weathersunsmall:

OK I know - come Jan-March when we're well in the minus's you'll be laughing! At least we'll have the chinook to break it up though.

Totally different today, sun shining which is taking the edge of the cold but still a bit windy just not as much. You'll be amazed how different it feels in the minuses I know when I was in NS in Feb house hunting it was -8-12 and didn't feel like it.

So many people have said that to me - I guess it must be true! Either that or you're all in on a horrid joke!

Of course all this warmth is due to end........on my day off!!!!
