What Is Your Most Gross, Yucky, Disgusting Nursing Horror Story?

Here is my most gross, yucky, disgusting nursing story! Nurses Humor Article

Updated:

I was working a night shift on a tele floor as a new Nurse.

We had this one poor old lady who was confused and was restrained as usual for her safety. She was our designated resident nightmare geri from hell, so she was placed near the Nurse's station.

So we are chilling out at the Nurse's station, chatting and trying to get through another night...

Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I see our lady in question standing in the dimly lit doorway of her room!

I instantly leap out and run to her. As I approach her, she appears to be falling towards me, so I meet her in a bear hug...my arms around her waste, and her arms around my shoulders.

As I catch the lady, I notice a very strong smell of feces, and I feel something warm on my hands, arms and shoulders...

My fellow heroes come in behind me, and as the lights are turned on, my worst fears are instantly realized.

Yes, I caught the poor old lady with a good old bear hung football catch, but I was also covered in the lady's feces.

As I look at her, she has feces smeared all over her arms and hands... (and even her face!)

And of course, now so did I! :D

the other day i was assigned to recovery in labor and delivery so i got a repeat c/s that came in contracting. it seems to be that each time i get my hair done i end up circulating in the OR. so i whined a bit. after the 8 hr wait time since patient ate 2 mins before walking into triage, i take her to the OR and she gets a spinal. i lay her down and begin to prep her belly. by the time i got to the second sponge she sat up a bit and proceeded to vomit :barf01: fish, rice and carrots, some went right into my left eye. yech! i let one of the docs know but i had to keep prepping and keep going until baby was out before i could contact someone at the front to come relieve me. all the time trying to remember her hep status. it was definitely nasty. and i had to go to the ER to get irrigation, talk about my hair getting messed.

I narrowly missed getting hurled on by a LOL with an SBO last night. She was starting to throw up and turned to the side I was on as I was trying to get her a basin and I jumped away just as a stream of green liquid flew out of her mouth! :o  What didn't help matters is that I'm getting over the flu so my stomach is extra queasy. :o

Gross out hunny.

The earwax story was definitely gross!

While still doing clinicals during my 2nd quarter in school, we were working in a local nursing home. It was the end of the day and we were all coasting until time to leave for the day, when all of a sudden, I look up and this old lady is sitting in a geri-chair in the hall at the NS vomiting. I took off to get some towels and wash cloths to clean her. When I got back, I found that she'd also thrown up her dentures and was licking them clean. Sorry folks, I hate to dissapoint you all but I had to leave and let her finish! I was sicker than she was! Even my nursing instructor was heaving on this one. lol This is the one thing that I'll never forget.

OK well still being a student I havent gotten to my clinical stage but being as curious as I am I tend to ask every nurse I see about their worst moment. Well this past weekend I pulled the muscles in my lower back and decided to go to the ER after not being able to move without extreme pain. So I am in triage and the nurse asked me what I was going to school for we preceeded to talk about her experience and I just had to post it. One night an elderly woman walks in complaining of severe abdom. cramps it got to the point to where the woman couldnt get up to use the restroom. So they decided to cath her. Well the woman smelled just horrible to begin with and wouldnt you know it she got the job. So she goes to prep her and a little white worm falls out. Yep its a magget. Apparently the woman had stuck a grape inside at some point in time and the maggets began to tunnel their way through her abdom. cavity! Im assuming she had some infection prior to this. I believe the woman was a little on the dementia side! (so far I havent heard a story thats grossed me out I think I am ready for it) But I dont want to speak to soon!

thats gross i bet she got up just so you could go and checks on her. i bet you where happy to get into clean scrubs.

Last night, walked into a room to give a pancreatitis pt some MSO4...the pt (rather large woman, covered in tattoos) was lying with her gown pulled up to her chest, with her leg hooked up over the side rail, showing me EVERYTHING. Everytime I walked into the room, that's just how she was...tried covering her up, and she went back to her exposed state every time...30-something, a/ox3... Blech!

wonderful thats gross a farliy large women exposeing her self to you then letting out a belch i bet you lost your appite the rest of the day.

I started a new job last May and was working on my second wk there. There was a man there with this HUGE tumor that started in the corner of his eye. The tumor had grown so big that it covered everything but his left eye. Picture, if you will, the gas mask that you see people wearing in the military or something) The dressing was to be changed on night shift only. The rest of the time he walked around with his head wrapped like a mummy with this bloody dressing unraveling to all degrees.

I had to change this dressing one morning before I went home. I ask the day nurse to go with me the first time I changed it. We gathered the things needed and proceeded to the man's room. We get in there and I proceed to unwrap this mess hanging from the man's head. The day nurse all the time saying over and over don't pull it, don't pull it, it'll start bleeding and we can't stop it! You all know if you have a dressing that is draining, and hasn't been changed in over 24 hrs, it's going to stick. As I proceeded to ease and coax this dressing off, I finally got to the wound. Keep in mind, this thing is smelling like rotten hamburger or chicken and the first time I'd had any dealings with it at all. I was looking at the tumor and noticed it seemed to be alive and pulsating. Upon closer observation, I noticed maggots crawling in and out. I dropped everything in his lap and left the room calling the other nurse out there. She asked what was wrong, I told her that there was NO WAY I could do this dsg change that the wound was full of maggots. The cna's were going up and down the hall and thought that it was the looks of the tumor that had upset me they were all laughing. A maggot is the one thing that truly grosses me out and I can't deal with them at all. I went and got the supervisor and sent her to the room. The nurse that was in the room with me assured them that there was indeed maggots in the wound.

To make a long story short here, I was terminated for not performing this dressing change. Before I left that morning, there was an order to transport this res. to the hosp. for treatment. (The administrator of the facility cancelled this Dr's order.) She didn't want state called in on it. Nothing was done for the man. They even denied that there was maggots in the wound the very next day and told me that I couldn't chart that there was a maggot infestation in the wound. lol I stood my ground and let them all know that I was not crazy and I knew what I saw. Hence, the termination.

I hope you reported that facility. That's total patient neglect, and you should not have been fired for that. You should also report your findings and the outcome to the BON.

I had a guy on bowel prep a couple days ago whose stool looked very similar to a wonderful bean and veggie soup I've made, and eaten, in the past. The first bucketful was so nasty that I nearly puked and forgot altogether to scoop some up for the lab sample.

It was so bad that the patient soiled his drawers getting all the way to the bathroom instead of using the bedside commode 'cause he wanted to be able to flush it immediately. When I finally get a sample, and of course I gotta use a regular ole spoon to get it, lab says, nope, not enough.

Ok. Next time the guy has produced quite a lot but it has only got 9 pounds of toilet paper in there so I go fishing thru it to get all the TP out, only to find that leaves me not enough for their dangflabbit ova and parasites test.

I give him baby wipes. They don't absorb all the stool. But they DO stop up the toilet when I fish them out of the next bucket.

I swear, I couldn't sleep the next day for smelling that crap. Oh yes, and there were two GI bleeds up the hall, this guy's poop was worse than both of them.
