Offered job, later told it's not guaranteed

I was offered my dream job recently, along with some paperwork. I accepted the offer, and sent back the paperwork. A few days later, HR called me and told me that I am still not guaranteed the job yet and they are trying to figure out a plan for me, and that I will hear from them in about a week. I am kind of a last minute hire.

My NCLEX date is a little late (I had no job offer when I got my ATT and had taken a 2 month break from job applications), and I am worried about all the details in addition to my NCLEX.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? I cancelled a summer volunteering commitment for this job, before receiving the phone call stating that my position was not guaranteed.

I do know that this is a "dream job" for me, and I take it very seriously. I don't want to lose this opportunity.

Some people in my life are telling me not to get too optimistic, and that it is very likely I will end up not having this job. However, a lady I know who works in HR at a different place told me that they are just doing background checks and things like that and not to worry.

Don't read too much in to the "not guaranteed" statement. HR folks are very careful to avoid the legal entanglements that can happen when a job applicant is "promised" something - whether it is the job, specific hours, salary, etc - because the statement could be considered an enforceable "verbal contract". So, they usually make sure that there is no 'promise' prior to sending you a written job offer. Many times they just use the word "contingent", which is a less alarming way to describe the situation... "any job offer will be contingent upon ____"

I also wouldn't read into the "guaranteed" part either. Like others have said, background checks, credit checks, and reference checks must be successfully completed first. Even then, most states are "at will employment" states.

Texas is an "employment-at-will" state. Generally, employees without a written employment contract can be fired for good cause, bad cause, or no cause at all. In an at-will situation, either the employer or employee may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without warning, and with or without cause, unless there is an existing agreement with express terms and conditions covering its termination.

Most every job I've ever gotten, the original offer was contingent upon passing the background check, pre-employment physical, etc., etc., etc. No biggie.

Yup, I still think you have the job as long as background check is clear and you pass NCLEX.

It sounds, from your original post, like you have not passed the NCLEX and gotten licensed yet. Could they be waiting for that? Licensure would, obviously, be the big "contingent upon" factor in any job offer.

I think that this is the main issue they are having. I was a "last minute hire"

I wish they just told me "ok we like you, but we want you to pass your NCLEX before doing anything else. And you're a last minute hire so we may or may not be able to fit you into this program." instead of offering me a job, then calling me to take back the offer, and putting me through weeks of suspense.

From what you write it sounds like you have the job but just missed the scheduled start date the for orientation classes. You just might have to wait a while.

In my neck of the woods, techs get hospital job offers prior to NCLEx, then fail NCLEX, and still end up in the job. That is, provided they pass on the 2nd time.
