- Sep 15, '12 by TheCommuterRealistically speaking, what are your other options in a tough nursing job market? Look at your situation in the following manner:
1. LTC job = RN pay and RN experience
2. No job = no pay and no experience
I suppose you can re-word your question to read, "Is it a good idea to pass up LTC opportunities while waiting for the hospital job that might never happen?" - Sep 15, '12 by cjr2619Hi there! I am applying to nursing school right now and I have been thinking of other options in case I cannot find a job at a hospital when I graduate. One thing I think you might want to look into in plastic surgery. The nurses in Rhodes offices get both OR and PACU experience and it might be an easy transition to a PACU position in a hospital. Just something to think about.

I want to stay in the area I live in now! I could move and work in a hospital but I don't want to do that! I think I will apply to LTC facilities.
How long does it usually take a new grad to get their first job? I have been out of school for over 4 months!! - Sep 15, '12 by perioddramaQuote from gustia55How long does it take? Average of over a year. Someone recently posted on here that she got a job after 2 long years. How long does it usually take a new grad to get their first job? Take what you can get! - Sep 15, '12 by live2run00oh wow that makes me feel better! Would you recommend taking an LTC job or moving for a hospital job?
- Sep 15, '12 by perioddramaQuote from gustia55It's tough to find a hospital job now. It's not impossible, it's just a lot harder than it used to be. If you land a hopsital job, great! But apply to LTCs, and other non-hospital places just in case. But money = money (and RN experience = RN experience) like TheCommuter said.TheCommuter likes this. - Sep 15, '12 by live2run00Thank you!!! I will deff Start applying to LTC facility and I was thinking of applying I flu clinics too
- Sep 15, '12 by cjr2619Quote from gustia55It all depends on the place, I had a friend who got hired at a plastic surgery office and she was a new grad. She was so happy because she wants to be an OR nurse. This was in Newport news Virginia. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with. I agree with the commuter, any experience is better than none! Good luck and keep us posteddo they hire new grads? I think plastic surgery offices want OR experience.
