What to do??...

Nurses Career Support

I've got a job offer at an Endoscopy center with great hours (mon-fri; 7-3) no weekends;no holidays! I have until tmrw to make a choice!

However I have another interview at a hospital working straight nights (my #1 choice) but it's not till next week! It's not a guarantee that I'll get the position though... So what should I do about the job offer? My husband is telling me to take their offer & just quit once I get the other job, but I don't want to burn any bridges or upset them in case I want to apply there again in the future!...

If I do take the offer & end up getting the night position as well... How would I tell them I no longer want to work there?...

Why did you make a thread asking for advice when it is obvious you had already made up your mind?

I'm late at the gate but... I would have accepted the sure thing, and, if the other job was offered to you, be professional and tell the first employer that you are accepting a job that more closely fits your needs. A couple of weeks is not much time invested into a new employee, and I can assure you, there are other candidates lined up to take your place, so it is unlikely you would have left them high and dry. I hope you get the hospital job and it works out for everyone! Please let us know.

Here's a novel approach...why not tell them the truth! OMG; if we were ever honest what would happen

Go to the first offer and explain and ask them if they would wait to see if you get offer #2. They will appreciate your honesty and more than likely wait since you have displayed such tremendous professionalism. It's a business and if you took the job and than quit it would not look good and you would have taken advantage of them. Karma does exist.

Deal with them and be honest...what do you have to lose

From someone working the night shift for 14 years, I am dying for a job like endoscopy, clinic, outpatient. Can't get out of the hospital setting quick enough.

I would take the job. Hospitals take longer to get back to you. Any hospital job I had, it was at least 3 weeks before I knew the final word and 2 more weeks before I started.

Personally I would prefer that setting over acute care at this point in my nurse life.

Many people ask for advice when the true intent is for someone to validate the decision they have already made, but have not yet acted upon.

I still stand by my assertion that we should accept what has firmly been offered to us in the employment marketplace, even if it is less than ideal. We should never act on an uncertain future.

@theCommuter : thanks for your post. You are right...I subconsciously made my decision and seeking validation/support and other opinions before acting upon it. It's not a bad thing to do this though. Im always open to hearing the opinions (whether I agree or not) insights of my fellow nurses to make sure I'm not being irrational or crazy. Although your opinion and approach to this situation is logical and safe... There was just a gut/ intuition telling me that I shouldn't. With that being said, thank you everyone for your advice! I will let u know the results in a week or so.

Let me see if I have this right: you have (ok, had) guarantee of M-F, daytime clinic hours, no weekends, no holidays. In other words, a normal life, a GREAT balance (when it comes to nursing) for work and personal time.

You traded that for nightshift in a hospital, which naturally includes weekends, and holidays, and will probably have you coming in early and staying late to cover shortages. Your phone will be ringing with supervisors begging you to come in on your days off because of call-outs for regular shifts, holidays, weekends, you name it. You will be new and therefore short end of the stick for requests for said holidays and weekend time for attempts at a personal life.

For a new nurse, I'd say the acute care experience would be more desirable than the better work atmosphere. More experience = more future opportunities.

Whether you're irrational or crazy (as you said in a previous post) I can't say, I don't know you. But based on this....I just don't get it.

A new nurse, ok. But since you're NOT a new nurse.....WHAT are you THINKING?!?

I dont consider myself "new" as in "new grad." I've been a nurse for three years. After much consideration, although the clinic job has nice hours that are compatible with my family & personal life... It isn't compatible with my school. I'm in a cohort program at this time and would have to put school on hold for another year (something I really dont wish to do at this time). The clinic is also a dead end job and not much opportunities available at the end... At least in the hospital I am exposed to more opportunities!

Ok, at least I understand the thinking process better. Which will be better for you in the end we can't know yet, but.....I wish you well :)

Update: I am extremely devAsted to report that I did not get my #1 choice because of an internal candidate hire. However, I don't regret my decision about turning down my other option! Everything happens for a reason. Only in time will I discover the reason!
