RE: MY POST "ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY"

Nurses Career Support

Published

This is to address questions and remarks made on my original post:

1. I agree that we are not adequately compensated for the work we do. But, how do you put a price on saving someone's life, comforting the sick, giving relief to another's concern, and showing compassion to someone that has lost a loved one?

2. On a personal note, I did give up a job which paid more money than nursing does. I did this because Nursing is my passion and what I have always wanted to do. The paycheck may not be what it should be, but the words of kindness from a patient, the "thank yous" from family members, and the words of praise for what I do is priceless. I still managed to put my daughter though college, pay my bills, and maintain a lifestyle that I enjoyed. It was not easy I admit, but I was happy with myself for what I did, not what I made.

3. Nursing is not a human sacrifice on capitilism. We perform a service that many people cannot do and they appreciate it.

4. I hope some of you remember the Oklahoma City Bombing. I was in Oklahoma at the time and helped where I was needed. I did not get paid money but I got paid with satisfaction that I was able to provide the community with a service that was being tested to the limit. To be able to step in and give another fellow worker a short break, giving a shoulder to cry on, and words of praise for what the others were doing did not have a price tag. I do believe that many of the nurses, firemen, EMT's, Paramedics, and physicians did not even think to "charge for their services". And how do you charge for that?

5. The stock boy at a seven-eleven may make more money per hour but what has that got to do with the care we provide. It has been my expierance that alot of these people are only concerned with getting off work and do not care about your worries or concerns. I personally would rather have someone that is concerned about me in a healthcare issue than the hourly pay that a stockboy makes.

I HAVE NOT DONE THIS TO OFFEND ANY OF YOU. I HAVE DONE THIS TO EXPRESS MY CONCERN FOR OUR PROFESSION. I HAVE BEEN ON BOTH SIDES OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION, AS A PATIENT AND AS A NURSE. AND THE TIMES THAT I WAS A PATIENT IT NEVER CROSSED MY MIND AS TO WHAT THE NURSE WAS GETTING PAID, BUT THE TYPE OF CARE THAT I RECIEVED. TOO MANY INDIVIDUALS HAVE GONE INTO THE NURSING PROFESSION BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE IDEA THAT THEY WILL MAKE "LOT'S OF MONEY". THAT IS NOT WHAT THE NURSING PROFESSION IS ABOUT. WE AS A NATION HAS LET MONEY BE THE RULER OF OUR LIFE WHEN WHAT WE DO TO HELP OTHERS SHOULD BE MORE IMPORTANT.

THE POINT I AM TRYING TO MAKE IS THAT NURSING SHOULD BE ABOUT CARING AND PROVIDING OUR SOCIETY WITH A SERVICE THAT MANY ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO DO. I PERSONALLY FEEL LIKE A SPECIAL HUMANBEING THAT HAS THE KNOWLEDGE TO HELP TRY TO SAVE A LIFE, CARE FOR THE SICK, AND BRING COMFORT TO THOSE IN NEED.

FROM MOST OF THE RESPONSES I HAVE RECIEVED AND READ ON OTHER RELATED TOPICS, I FEEL AS IF I MUST BE A "RARE-BREED" OF INDIVIDUAL THAT CARES MORE ABOUT THE PROFESSION NOT THE MONEY. I DO NOT THINK THAT FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE HELPED TO MAKE OUR PROFESSION IMPORTANT THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT SHE GOT PAID. I AM BEGINNING TO THINK THAT THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I MADE WAS STARTING THIS. I FELT IT WAS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE THAT FOR THE ONES GOING IN THIS PROFESSION TO STOP AND THINK WHY THEY ARE DOING IT. THAT IF MONEY IS THE ISSUE FIND ANOTHER PROFESSION. I AM VERY SADDEN AT THE WAY SOME PEOPLE HAVE MADE ME FEEL LIKE I AM UNREALISTIC. IN FACT, MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE NEVER COME TO THIS SITE. I THOUGHT I COULD HELP OTHERS BUT INSTEAD I ONLY SEEM TO BE BRINGING ANGER. I APOLOGIZE TO THE ALLNURSES WEBSITE FOR THIS. IN FACT, I AM SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING NEVER POSTING AGAIN AND JUST REMAIN A SILENT VOICE.

Please don't stop posting because some disagree or misconstrue what you mean. I admire you and your posts on this and other topics.

Nursing work is too valuable, but people don't think about that when they don't want to need our help. SO, they would rather pay entertainers.

Nurses need to value what we do. Weat minimum need to earn enough to survive with dignity. From that point on lets argue if we must. I volunteer, but can only afford to because I have a paid job too. When volunteering I can always say, "NO". Less is expected from those not paid, too much is currently expected of working nurses.

Sounds like your having a real bad day.

Your sadly mistaken if you beleive the majority of nurses go into nursing for the money. What money? For the amount of work and hrs we put in, it no-way compares to what we actually bring home.

We all go in expecting to do a 8-12 hr shift, to find out we're short staffed and your expected to carry the extra load. You complete your shift to find out you're going to have to pull a double and perhaps expected back the next day. So on and so on.

It's not the nursing that we dislike. It's all the bull crap that we have to put up with. I think you could've figure that one out? Don't mean to burst your bubble, but you're not the only "rare breed" out there. There are plenty of "special human beings" in the nursing field. The sad thing is, they just go unnotice. I don't mean to offend you or to cause you any ill feelings. I myself would hate to see you not post any more. I've read alot of your post and found them to be interesting. Besides, there aren't to many LPN's in this forums. I would hate to lose you. :-) So please stay.

Wait a minute...you get "Thank you's"?!?!?!

You get to have a LIFE??!!?!?!?!

HOW????????

Thanks to these shifts I don't even have custody of my KIDS! I have no availability to make friends! And I have no energy on my days off - I'm trying to recover from coming home feeling like I've been hit by a truck! And thanks to the child support I have to pay (based on imputed, not actual wages) I am trapped because I can't even afford to put a roof over my own head.
