Previously "self-employed" Should I list clients as work references?

Anyone here who was previously "self-employed"? Did you offer previous clients as references?

I have:

10 yrs. with my current job

20 yrs. "self-employment" before that (in customer service related business)

When I fill out job applications they ask if they can contact my current supervisor or employer and I check yes as I am in great standing at this job.

When they ask for the name of my supervisor on past jobs or person to contact about my work history for those 20 years I just put "self-employed" and feel this leaves the job recruiter no one to speak with for work reference.

How do any of the rest of you address "self-employment" on work applications or resume?

For my "self-employment" I was my own boss although I provided customer service for many clients, therefor I worked for them even though they were not my boss. All of my clients were happy with my work and would give me a good reference.

I have listed individual former clients as references with their permission. Lot easier to do this than to have to deal with anyone dismissing your application or giving you a hard time.

I just put self-employed and my own name and didn't have a problem getting hired. I guess you could add in your cover letter that professional references are available on request. If you do add them on the application itself I'd just be sure it is clear that they are clients and not employers so your honesty isn't ever called in to question. Good luck.

It is unclear in your post whether you provided nursing services to your 'clients'. If so, do NOT list them, even with their permission because it would constitute a HIPAA violation.
