Please Help,,cold Feet!!!

I am almost positive I want to be a nurse, HOWEVER, While I start LVN school in Jan '06, I feel as if I am having second thoughts. I keep on thinking ,....,,..Is this for me? Am I insane? Should I be in an office pushing papers,or a fireman???? Maybe its just cold feet. I guess the fact that I am a 19 yr old male doesn't help either. WHY DO I FEEL THIS WAY. is it normal? Thank you all for your advice.

DANIEL soon to be LvN student

Cold feet? Quite normal. It's time to jump in with both feet first and get them warmed up! GO FOR IT !

The wonderful thing about nursing is that it gives you the opportunity to work in such a variety of settings. If you don't like the hospital, there are so many other options. Nurses are needed in schools, industrial settings, hospices, and outpatient clinics. Nurses also work in offices (like managed care companies) and there are even some who do end up as clinical coordinators in fire/EMS programs.

Nursing is great for those of us who tend change our minds a lot! I hope you hang in there.

Best of luck,

Eric

Default Ask yourself a question...
Y'know, I think most people get cold feet right before making a significant decision in life. I'm not a nurse yet, but every time I have second thoughts about investing the required time, money, and energy in a nursing education, I remind myself why I chose nursing in the first place. It might be helpful for you to do the same. For instance, maybe the medical field interests you, or you want to be in a career that will make a difference in the lives of others, etc. Yeah, it's gonna take time to get the experience/ education you'll need to be a great nurse and you'll probably work alot of long hours, but if this is a career that you'll love and that will fulfill you, go for it!!

Now, that I have spent the first $1500 on books, uniform and supplies, I am getting second thoughts too. I haven't really had any since I first cosidered nursing school 14 months ago. So, I am gonna go for it and see what happens; you should too.

Good luck

I have a friend at work who's in IT with me. Many years ago he started down the path to nursing, but got discouraged as he realized how few males were in the profession. He choose to do something more "traditional".

Now, in his 40's and with the responsibilities of being a "grown up", I think he wishes he had followed his heart. He is one of my greatest supporters.

Follow your heart. As was pointed out earlier, there are many, many options in this field. And at your age, if you decided in a few years that you want something else (i.e., fireman), that will be an option still AND you will have the added benefit of your nursing education.

Best Wishes!

Yes, it's normal.

In fact throughout the entire program and my first year I kept thinking "what the heck was I ever thinking that I could be a nurse!"

Good luck!
