Motivation to change from negative to positive attitude R/T nursing profession?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello everyone, Frankie here. What do you think motivates a nurse to change their attitude and/or feeling from negative to positive when referring to their nursing career? frankie

Specializes in Hemodialysis, Home Health.

One's outlook on life in general. Keeping an attitude of gratitude..even when things are not as we would have them. (Surely there is SOMETHING we all can find to be grateful for!) Even in nursing under the current situation... gratitude that we have had an opportunity to touch someone's life with caring and concern... for HOWEVER BRIEF a time.

Specializes in Everything but psych!.

Sometimes I think the negativism is somewhat within the nurse's own personality. Just as some people in life are pessimists, I think that pessimism gets directed toward their nursing career. I've worked with some nurses like that in the past. Trying to help them change always resulted in frustration for me. After numerous years in nursing, I finally realized that the only practice I can control, is my own. Sometimes, happily, my changes influence others around me. The #1 step is being happy with oneself. If this is not there, no matter what type of a position a person is in, they will be negative about it. My conclusion: when looking at a job, #1 is who I might be working with. Everything else comes after that.

I think taking action and feeling a sense of control is what gets people positive. The real whiners are always the ones sitting on their butts thinking that they are victims incapable of changing anything,.

Good point fergus!:)

I got pretty negative in a work environment that was dysfunctional.

It wasn't dysfunctional for everyone there, mind you, but for me=== it was. I realized after I got outta there how it affected me. I would come into work, happy to be alive, and just the act of smiling would target me for extra work and criticism.

Now THIS job---everyone's smiling, most of the time. :) yay!
