Getting rehired by a former employer???

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello everyone. I have a really big question that has been bothering me for a few days. A few months ago I resigned from a job due to a personal family situation. I really enjoyed this nursing assistant position in a skilled nursing facility. But at that moment I just felt like I couldn't continue. Big mistake! Now I wish more than anything I would of never left and stuck through it. SO, I am wondering if they would hire me again? I was a good worker and got along with all my coworkers. Also, I know skilled nursing facilities require a few days to a week of orientation, and it usually takes place in the morning. But I currently go to school in the morning so I wouldn't be able to attend orientation. Would it be possible if I didn't go to orientation because I have done it before and I know the facility well? Has anybody experienced going back to a previous employer before?

ps: I plan on paying them a visit soon but I would like to hear some feedback from you guys also (: I only worked in the facility for about 4 months.

Thank you all!

No nursing experience, but lots of work experience here. I would say a lot depends on your work record while you were there (attendance, evaluations, etc.) and how you left things (did you give appropriate notice, were you too occupied with personal issues to adequately fulfill your two weeks, etc.) -- there may also be various corporate or facility-specific policies for rehiring. Just my $0.02

Do they need nursing assistants? How badly? And, of course, the individual circumstances. I once worked at a facility where a lazy CNA who smoked pot on the job was hired back three times after being let go. That says a lot more about the standards at the facility than it does about the desirability of that particular "worker", to use the term broadly.

It would not hurt to visit the facility and have a talk with them to find out. They would probably be glad to welcome you back. Good luck.

I agree that as long as when you left it was on good terms it would not hurt to see if they will hire you back. On the orintation thing though I would not go in and ask if you did not have to do it. It might be seen as you think you are a know it all and too good for orintation. Instead maybe go in it saying I know orintation is usually in the morning, but I was wondering if there was another time of the day that I could get orintation because I have class in the morning. Then let them decided if they want to change time for you or they might then say well because you have worked with us before you don't have to take it. That way you are not trying to change the facilities policies.

"SO, I am wondering if they would hire me again?"

Only the hiring manager can answer that. You won't lose anything by applying.

"Would it be possible if I didn't go to orientation because I have done it before and I know the facility well?"

We would have no way of knowing that.
