Does Nursing School GPA Really Matter?

Hi Everyone,

I'm entering a diploma program this fall after 15 years in another industry...I have a BA in Marketing and an MBA.

In my previous life, GPA was rarely mentioned during the hiring process...either mine or those of candidates I interviewed.

How much emphasis is placed on GPA for RN graduates? Does having a 4.0 vs. a 3.0 offer any distinct advantages regarding positions out of nursing school...or down the line?

Thanks for your help!
Matt

Congrats on your decision. I have not found that GPA matters once you graduate. Most places will be very pleased that you have an MBA! That will be a real point in your favor.

I dont think most employers care what your GPA was in nursing school, just as long as you have passed, that is all that really matters once you are in nursing school. I remember 73 was the magic number for me!

I have not heard of anyone being asked the GPA when applying for a job. However, if you plan on getting your masters in nursing and becoming a mid-level like a FNP or CNM then grades do matter.

I've never been asked about my GPA in a job interview. The only situation I can imagine in which it might become a factor is, for example, a competitive nurse externship program for new grads, where there are many applicants for a few slots.

Usually, a warm, legally licensed body will do. :0)

Correct. I am looking at new grad residency programs and some have GPA requirements. NYU's is 3.5.

Good luck!
