Samford University FNP Fall 2013 students?
Hi StudentNP, Getting excited about starting and looking forward to meeting you. What do you think about the program so far...any words of wisdom?

Samford University FNP Fall 2013 students?
I'm in Charlotte...I'm probably going to fly too. That would be a long drive home after 4 days of orientation. It looks like there are several moderately-priced hotels about a mile-ish west of campus. The Marriott Courtyard offering the student discount is in that area, I think.

Samford University FNP Fall 2013 students?
I'll be there with you this Fall and can't wait to get started! I've been really impressed with everyone I've interacted with from the school so far. I researched plenty of schools, and Samford seems like a great fit...its the only school I applied to. I'm in North Carolina and don't know anything about Birmingham...trying to decide if I should fly or drive. I look forward to meeting you!

just took nclex today
I took it today too and felt the same way. I tried the Pearson "trick" and got the good pop-up. That made me feel better.
- Does anyone have a trick to remember the cranial nerves

beta blockers for anxiety?
I had a terrible fear of public speaking in my previous career, but needed to give presentations pretty frequently. Beta-blockers allowed me to take the "edge" off of my anxiety without losing my ability to focus. I definitlely recommend them if you're anxious. I'll probably pop one Wednesday when I take the NCLEX.

Grading Scales
DarkRainy - that's the main reason I started this thread. It seems that, for example, an 85 would be considered a C in my (your) program, but a B in a good number of other programs...nursing courses only. How will that be viewed when we're trying to pursue advanced degrees? It certainly doesn't look like a level playing field.

Grading Scales
Thanks for sharing everyone! It sounds like things are a little different across the board. I didn't specify, but my scale is just for nursing courses. I wonder what impact different scales have (if any) when applying to BSN completion/MSN programs, since not everything looks like it's apples-to-apples.

Grading Scales
Just curious - our grading scale (RN) is: A (92-100), B (86-92) & C (80-86). Is this pretty consistent with all schools? Thanks!

oh, so you're studying to be a "male" nurse...
"I thought about becoming a female nurse, but I couldn't find a skirt that fit right".

going to Mercy School of Nursing?
I'm ready...can't wait to get started. Couple of questions...I have all my general college courses out of the way, so I'll just need to take nursing courses. I'm planning to apply for the accelerated program...is that insane? Also, I'm thinking about getting a laptop. Is it beneficial to have one? Thanks for your advice! Matt

going to Mercy School of Nursing?
I start this Fall as well...I'm wrapping up my last pre-req this semester (A&P II). I didn't realize there were so many applicants...makes me feel even better about getting accepted! It's also great to see there's at least one other person my age in the program! (I'm 41 too OakIsland) I look forward to seeing you in a couple of months! Matt

Does Nursing School GPA Really Matter?
Hi Everyone, I'm entering a diploma program this fall after 15 years in another industry...I have a BA in Marketing and an MBA. In my previous life, GPA was rarely mentioned during the hiring process...either mine or those of candidates I interviewed. How much emphasis is placed on GPA for RN graduates? Does having a 4.0 vs. a 3.0 offer any distinct advantages regarding positions out of nursing school...or down the line? Thanks for your help! Matt

Diploma to MSN Question

Diploma to MSN Question
Hi Everyone, I'm changing careers, and am expecting admission to a diploma program any day now. My eventual goal is to pursue an advanced practice position...Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Anesthesia. I know that diploma programs emphahsize clinical components and don't include most of the baccalaureate courses that ADN or BSN programs do...which can hinder advancement and/or continued education for a diploma RN. I have a BA in a non-science field, along with an MBA. Would this compensate for me not having a baccalaureate nursing background? Will I be able to pursue and be considered for the same type of opportunities & continued education as an ADN or BSN RN? Thanks for your help! Matt
