Cannot land a job! Need help please!!

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello and forgive me please if I am posting this in the wrong place.

I am a recent new grad with my BSN and I have applied EVERYWHERE in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex but have not been able to land a job. I have been to multiple interviews but I cannot seem to make it through to getting a job offer.

However, I have had no problem getting a job offer for a hospital in Houston and Austin but my husband and I can no longer relocate out of the metroplex.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to get a job? I feel hopeless at this point.

Thank you in advance.

Try RN residency program in your area. I think Methodist health center has one which will start by July

I have applied to all of them... I was only able to get 5 interviews at 2 different hospitals in the area. Methodist just keeps saying they have chosen a more qualified applicant for their intern positions. I did apply to the recent one posted by them though.

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

Are you only applying to hospitals? Because that might be hindering you.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

This.

If you need a job apply to more places than just hospitals. It's better to have a job/experience then no job/experience at all. Apply everywhere! LTC, jails, LTACs & anywhere you see an opening. But don't do PDN, I wouldn't suggest that to a new grad.

I know that for me the difference came when I wasn't exuding desperation. I was literally saying I know I would be an amazing nurse if only given the opportunity. Never thought of it as begging but my brother pointed it out to me and the next interview I relaxed went in confident not cocky and hungry not desperate. Wouldn't you know I got a job offer 6 hours later.

Specializes in PACU.

Start applying everywhere that isn't a hospital.

Specializes in Urgent Care, Oncology.

Urgent cares are also a good idea!

Your panic is unwarranted if you're excluding non-hospital settings.

RNcali22's change of attitude reminds me of when the British writer G. K. Chesterton was almost broke and desperately in need of work writing for a newspaper. Boldly, he spent almost every penny he had on a meal in an elegant London restaurant and then, relaxed and confident, went for that job interview. He got the job.

Why is this? Interviewers can sense desperation and it makes them nervous. "What does this applicant know about herself that I don't know"," they think. Even if the credentials look fine, they take a pass.

This Youtube short video focuses on a much more powerful message about fatherhood, but if you look closely, desperation is almost certainly why this father has trouble getting a full-time job.

Incredibly good acting, particularly that of the little girl. I can't help but wonder if the father and daughter of the video are also father and daughter in real life.

One suggestion for our poster. Get a friend who's a seasoned nurse to look at your experience and training. Then ask her to suggest where you'd fit best at present. Find your strengths, and go with them. Once you've had several Nursing Jobs, the going will get easier.

These are all great ideas - thank you very much. As far as me coming across desperate... perhaps I have been! I will re-evaluate my interviewing process and try things differently. Just yesterday I began to apply for LTC facility positions and home health. Hoping I receive some emails back today. Thank you to everyone.
