I got an offer to transfer to a new unit within the same facility, but I was waiting for the paperwork to be completed before I "gave notice"

Well, I messed up and told a "friend" who had also interviewed and wanted suggestions and to know if I'd gotten a call as she had not. I thought it was personal and it was not. She told people on our unit and now my coworkers know and my boss doesn't. I will never do that again.

Should I give notice now, or still wait till my transfer paperwork is done (still a few weeks)? I feel very unprofessional at this point.

Advice please....other than don't tell your "friends" before the boss.

Don't be surprised if your manager already knows. Often before a transfer is offered they must check with your current management team in the process. Your manager may be waiting for you to bring it up as usually intra- facility must be signed off by the current manager

As JustBeachy stated... more likely than not your manager already knows as they would have to approve your transfer and I'm sure the new manager spoke to your current manager for reference.

In the future, I would think the proper thing to do would be let your manager know BEFORE applying within the same hospital system. When I transferred I first told my NOM and explained why I wanted to transfer (professional goals).

You don't "give notice" when transferring in the same system. The managers agree on a transfer date.

At least that has been true in my experience.

I asked HR. They said you apply and if offered they transfer paperwork and THEN the employee is responsible for telling the manager. The transfer has taken so long and that is why I haven't told the manager.

I guess a little different than other places. But she does not know as far as I know. I just don't want her to find out through my coworkers. I sent an email to meet with her.

Maybe she knows and maybe she doesn't but at my entity, your manager can hold you on the staffing schedule for up to thirty days...so are you really sure she's in the dark on this one?

With my employer you have to inform you manager before you even apply. If you do not and HR finds out, they will pitch your app. I'm going to guess that if the staff know, your manager most likely does. It's like a bandaid. The sooner you tell them the better it will be. I would hate for my manger to hear it from a coworker instead of me. I imagine your manager wouldn't be too pleased about it either.

That's correct, in my facility as well. Your CURRENT manager actually has to APPROVE your transfer... so , yes, she probably allready knows
