Obamacare, what could go wrong?

"Let me get this straight . . .

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a... President who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!

What the hell could possibly go wrong?'"

Trust me. I am from the government and i am here to help you.

Nice balanced quote from a guy who has twice run his company into bankruptcy.

Specializes in Emergency.

Luckily, people that actually use there brains realize that foxnewscorp talking points(as put together in this fine quote) have zero merit. But I guess some people would rather live in the safety of fear and ignorance than actually investigate the world they live in.

I'm not familiar with the surgeon general and I'll stipulate that BO may be a former smoker, so other then those, what part of the quote to you believe to not be true???

"Fined"..think again...do more homework before you tackle that one

"Not adding new docs..." again...lie...in fact so absurd...do you really think the supply of docs from med schools is just going to come to a screeching halt? And when these "no docs" somehow magically appear where will they go..according to trump and fox style information they certainly won't be going to any country that has socialized medicine...they would not make any money...so I guess they are stuck here.

Are you 100% sure that every member of congress did not read the law??? Again I am sure you heard that on fox etc...TV... sad...

And again how does one define obese??? By the BMI..an archaic misused doctor shortcut for not taking the whole patient into account...and besides do overweight people and people who smoke become less than or ignorant in your eyes??? I do not condone it but many people in health care are just that...they still are great at what they do. Look at the many many threads in this forum to get up to speed.

"before benefits take effect..." again ...lie! I already know people that are directly benefiting from this law.

I do agree the law and the government has flaws...at least this bill is a step toward socialized medicine...maybe we can start to catch up to the rest of the civilized world...remember..first do no harm...that's FIRST...not after the profits have all been counted.

Try again...

This was a quote from Doanld Trump, not Fox News.

You are right. It is a tax, not a fine. I didn't really "tackle" it, just pasted his quote.

The quote didn't say doctor's were going away (although some believe they will). It said we weren't adding additional doctors. The point is the demand for healthcare is going to increase, but supply is not. Does the new law provide for your community to get additional doctors? Is it going to build you a new hospital?

Interesting you stated doctor's wouldn't want to practice somewhere where there is socialized medicine, but at the same time you like the law because it is a step toward socialized medicine. I'm not smart enough to understand that. I also don't get that if profit is taken out of healthcare like you would like, who is going to develop new medicines, build hospitals, become a doctor, etc.?

It was widely reported at the time that many members of congress didn't read the bill, including those who wrote parts of it. To me, it's not really a stretch to beleive that most if not all didn't read it. You weren't paying attention back then, but you can find many articles online about this.

I stated I didn't really pay attention to what he said about the surgeon general and about Obama smoking.

And yes, some benefits are in place but most are not even though we have already been paying for them and will be for awhile longer before they are in place. This also is not a secret.

"Try again"? Why so snippy?

Specializes in Critical Care.

There seems to be a perception that this will cause sick people to suddenly fall from the sky like a swarm of locusts. There will still be the same number of patients, just more of them will have a way to contribute their fair share for care that many are already receiving anyway.

Many of these patients may seek care they wouldn't have before which is a good thing and can actually take some of the burden off of our Docs rather than adds to it; currently patients without coverage often go undiagnosed and/or untreated for a variety of conditions. There are far less Doctor hours required to diagnose and control diabetes and hypertension in it's early stages than are required if we wait until the patient has a stroke, has an MI and needs OHS and goes on dialysis.

And couldn't things go wrong if we DON'T enact some major changes to our health system. Do you think everyone is fine the way things are now?

The current system of health care funding in the US has broken for a long time. People fighting to keep things the way they are now are either forgetting that -- or have some vested interest in maintaining the status quo. You have to question the motives of why the Republicans are fighting so hard to maintain the current broken system.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

Ah yes, Donald Trump.....such a wise sage........

I live in a state that has mandatory health coverage and as a (recently) former primary care provider, I saw the difference it made. People started getting routine preventative care, ER visits for minor complaints declined. And....jobs were created for NPs and PAs who are more than capable of delivering quality primary care to adults and children.

Obamacare is far from perfect, but I think it's an improvement over what we have now.

"Many will seek care they wouldn't have before..." Isn't that an increase in demand?

I agree with you that preventive medicine is the way to go. But who is going to provide preventive care to all those who now are going to seek it? And many think this isn't enough. They want more health services at lower prices. Some want free and unlimited healthcare. Who is going to provide all these services, and where is it going to happen?

And couldn't things go wrong if we DON'T enact some major changes to our health system. Do you think everyone is fine the way things are now?

No, I don't think things are fine the way they are. I think just about everyone agrees on that. And I don't think anyone is fighting to maintain the current system as is.
