In 2015, 213.8 million dollars was allocated for nursing workforce development and 244 million is budgeted for 2016.

My question is, where does this money go?

I have not been able to find anything online about this and I would really like to know.

Thank you.

Two places I would ask:

ANA- probably will get the most coherent answer the fastest

Your congressman - but they're all on vacation.

VERY interesting. There are contacts at the bottom of the page who I hope would be able to answer that question. I also agree with the above poster by asking your US Congressperson or Senator. Not sure the ANA would know and may be trying to find out as well!! I will dig around too and post what I find on here.

While the President proposed increasing nursing workforce development spending I don't think congress ever actually passed these increases in the 2015 budget, and actually overall HHS spending got cut. Where this Title VIII money goes is overall nursing education assistance but also with an emphasis on increasing the number of nurse practitioners.

From what I have come across, it looks like most of the $$ is allocated via nursing schools -earmarked for initiatives that increase enrollment (yeah, I know) including providing loans/scholarships for graduate & post-graduate students (new faculty) and subsidizing faculty salaries so that the school can hire more of them. I know of some schools that have also received grants to develop or improve their sim labs.

So - the Fed $ is focused on increasing the number of graduates. But, no one seems to be focusing on the number of jobs that actually exist, right? Crazy.

Of course ANA has info re Nursing Workforce Development Programs

Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Administration lists different Nursing Workforce Development programs

Click on Active grants and abstracts under each program to find program awardees + amount $$ provided

Example:

Hunter College /New York City Nursing Education Consortium in Technology received $264,599:

I request a funding preference for substantial contribution to meeting the needs of underserved populations.

NYCNECT's primary objectives impacting nursing education during the five-year project period will be:

1. Support the sharing and dissemination of expertise and resources in learner-centered technological strategies through a multi-institution collaborative infrastructure within the 12 CUNY schools of nursing

2. Prepare 350 nurse educators to use culturally competent simulated learning, informatics and telehealth

3. Demonstrate evidence-based education in new technologies, including distance learning methodologies and the creation and dissemination of learning environments that promote active collaborative learning and knowledge creation that apply 21st century literacies. (information, digital, visual)

Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention (NEPQR)
