With the current news over gun control and gun rights legislation being pushed through Congress as a result of the tragedies of Aurora, CO, Newtown, CT and the others like them, the thought of concealed carry among healthcare workers has got my attention peaked. Recently, another Allnurses member started a thread (up to 22 pages presently) about what nurses can do as a result of these horrific events.

This post is not meant to reflect my personal stance on this issue, although I can inform that I am not a CCL holder (however interested), nor is it meant to be a bashing session from either side, but I am interested in seeing how many individuals have their concealed carry license, and if they carry while they are at work (and, yes I am well aware of the legal stance healthcare facilities take as being gun free zones)?

I, also, am aware of some of our members being both nurses and current/former law enforcement officers, so what is your take on this issue?

I don't think I would carry a firearm if my job duties require me to be within the patients' reach and risk any altered or aggressive patients taking it from me and shooting me and others. I'm not a touchy person in everyday life and avoid situations and places that would cause me to be super close to strangers, so carrying outside of work would be a different story if I live somewhere where it's legal to do so.

Join the U.S. Army and you can be an LVN and sling M-16s, M249s, and sidearms in a combat support hospital. The grunts even let you play with their m203 grenade launchers ?. Even the RNs had weapons when I was in uniform. Just saying if you like guns...I mean weapons.

Spent 8 years on M1 tanks. No need to play with the little toys the hospital people would be carrying. I only carry now for self defense.

What does this mean? The little toys? Handguns? Who talks about playing with them? The hospital people? LOL. And if you carry for self defense, do you carry the big toys?

Sorry, in an earlier post someone mentioned joining military if I wanted to carry while working. Then went on to mention rifles and 203 grenade launchers. I have no need for that as the weapons I handled while on M1 tanks where 120 mm main gun and 50 caliber machine guns. I only carry for self defense at this point in my life so I carry much smaller. Usually either a 38 or 45 handgun. Always concealed.

There's a gun shop near me where I purchase my firearms - so I get an email that they have a limited number of ER15 rifles. So I tell my son and: he says

"No mom you can't have an AR15"

ME " not even if I let you shoot it?"

son " No mom, The AR15 is a tactical assault weapon and you don't need one. Let's but a puppy instead. "

Nurse walks in to answer call light.

Patient X: "I hope your just happy to see me"

Nurse: "Oh, this? It's just my concealed gun" "After El Paso, Gilroy, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Vegas, New York, Chicago, and those other shooting events, we can't be too careful now these days can we?."

I hear there's a daily shooting going on in Chicago year after year.

"Assault" weapon. Isn't a regular pistol an "assault" weapon too? You can spray just as much bullets with a 7/10 round magged pistol by changing mags every 5 seconds flat. Same effect as an AK or AR(auto firing is illegal). I've done that with a 45. If you live in rural America where help maybe an hour away, you might wanna consider buying a TACTICAL ASSAULT WEAPON or shotgun. Just my opinion.

I was going to say thank you for your service. But I'll just say "Hooah."
