the center ranks best and worst media portrayals of nursing for 2003

december 31, 2003 -- the center for nursing advocacy has issued its list of the best and worst media portrayals of nursing during 2003. the list highlights a variety of depictions of nursing--from television to the print media, from fiction to news, and from milwaukee to malaysia--that the center believes deserve recognition, for better or worse.

we offer congratulations to those responsible for items on the "best of" list and we encourage continued strong efforts from them. we are also reaching out to those responsible for items on the "worst of" list, in the hope that we can help them improve their treatment of nursing issues in 2004.

Interesting that their #1 Best Potrayal of a Nurse is both male and homosexual. Woot!

And well deserved.

Nurses cared for patients before AIDS had a name. Before we knew how it was transmitted. The ignorance of us all caused more fear than necessary but it was NURSES who overcame fear to nurse those who needed us.

Once I was channel surfing and came accross that show that had the ape in a nurses cap. I almost choaked. However, I calmed down and rationalized the situation saying to myself, "what do you expect from the idiots that do sitcoms, it is not worth getting your bowels in an uproar over this". I do wish the SPCA would check in on that poor ape, I am very suspicious of treatment of TV animals. I am not a PETA member but I do think there is a lot of abuse. I mean, TV producers do not give a crap about humans so I imagine animals fare even worse. They do however fear law suits and bad publicity. Arn't Orangutans on the endangered speicies list?

As usual, lots of good and interesting info here, K.

Thanks!
