U.K. Nurse wanting to move to U.S

World Registration

Published

Hi, I am a uk trained nurse. Adult trained but have 7 years experience on a level 3 NICU. I have started to complete the relevant paperwork in order to start the process of applying to work in the U.S. I am wondering if anyone could tell me what the likelihood is of me being able to successfully gain employment/sponsorship on a NICU? Also are there any other British nurses working in NY/U.S that could offer any advice?

Thank you in advance x

The main issue affecting a lot of UK trained nurses is ensuring that transcripts have both clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Obstetrics, Mental Health and Adult. Currently no place in the UK to make up hours and difficult in the US to find a nursing school willing to accept you as a guest to make up just the hours needed and not the full nursing course.

If you are looking at sponsorship for NY then that is one of the hardest places to find a employer willing to go the sponsorship route

Thanks for replying, yes that has been an issue I have come across researching online. I did mental health placement during my training, also 3 years general nursing (adult) and would neonatal count as obstetric and paediatrics do you think? I have been told to contact nmc for a complete transcript of hours completed so I will do that and go from there. Do you think the best thing to do is contact the hospitals in New York or just out of area directly? Thanks for your help, much appreciated x

Really until you get your registration sorted I wouldn't even bother looking for employer as most will want to know you are licensed to work

Thanks I was just thinking ahead really, do you know how long the process takes?x

Trudy won't count work experience only formal education.

It was undertaken as part of my degree, will that count? x

It must show up on your transcripts both clinical and theory. CVS is required by the state BON and average processing times are 6-8 months before you find whether the BON fins you eligible to sit NCLEX and do not register with Pearsonvue until BON says it is ok as Pearsonvue is only valid for 12 months and any issues resulting in delays and expires means paying more $$$$

The whole process is so complicated x

Complicated only if you overthink. Just do one step at a time and ask questions here.... We will guide you

Thank you so much, appreciate it í ½í¸Š so I think the first step is to sort my transcripts and apply to apply for licensure from the education department in NY? x

First step is starting CVS Credential Verification Service for New York State® | CGFNS International, Inc. | Global Credibility

Then after a couple of months complete application with NY BON
