U.K. Nurse wanting to move to U.S

World Registration

Published

Hi, I am a uk trained nurse. Adult trained but have 7 years experience on a level 3 NICU. I have started to complete the relevant paperwork in order to start the process of applying to work in the U.S. I am wondering if anyone could tell me what the likelihood is of me being able to successfully gain employment/sponsorship on a NICU? Also are there any other British nurses working in NY/U.S that could offer any advice?

Thank you in advance x

Thanks, how long do you think the whole process takes? x

NY process and this includes cvs on average takes 6-8 months. CGFNS on average waits 6 months to recieve all relevant documents that they send out for. CVS requires CGFNS to do all the running. The BON will then meet, usually once a month, to discuss IEN applications and make decision on allowing them to sit NCLEX or have to provide other documents

So it looks like the average time is about a year before things even move forwards in NY State. That seems like at a snails pace. I have heard that its easier in the middle states but the pay is also less

Depends if the BON requires anything. CGFNS will forward everything to the state after 6 months. The BON meets up to review IEN applications I believe once a month so depending where in the month application is sent will depend when reviewed. So on average takes 2 months and if everything is ok then eligibility is given to sit NCLEX so process could take 8 months if ready to sit exam as soon as eligibility is given

Is that the whole process up until the point when you can apply for job/sponsorship? I heard it was 3 years total x

The process to getting registered can take anything from 6-12 months. Then you have to find a employer willing to sponsor and start the immigration process, this is where things get hard. Not many employers are willing to wait x amount of years for someone to come to on immigrant visa (depending on place of birth) when there are many local nurses that can work straight away. There is no set time for a time frame as someone born in India has a wait time of over 15 years whereas some born in the EU may only have to wait a couple of years

It does seem like the hardest part of the whole process is getting an immigrant visa or find a sponsor that works with you
