New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand Part 2

World Registration

Published

Due to recent changes regarding applications for International nurses to Australia and the combining of the nursing boards to one central nursing board in Australia AHPRA I have started a new thread for people to discuss the new process on working in Australia.

Currently New Zealand is not accepting new applicants from International trained nurses except those that meet the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement {TTMR} this will be updated once the New Zealand nursing board reopen their books to International nurses.

Again.. Publicly thanking you pre for your help and replies.. i can now sleep well..

Hi cioman,

I think it's very nice of you spreading the information about working in Australia but I think too much of it would be easy feeding to them. I think sometimes people here try to just get the information here and do not research on it. Even about the bridging schools are still being asked when one can e-mail them right away or call them. It's so easy to do that if one has initiative. I find it very lazy to ask some easy questions when more than 80% of research are being provided by you. Two years ago these info were not available here and there are many of whom still managed to become a nurse back then.

@ gemini_star

You are right. Thank you for giving me an idea. I will e-mail AHPRA myself, for everything else, there's allnurses.com.

guys, do you have a sample (not the format) for the curriculum vitae and certificate of service? i've already read the format, but i'm not confident until i see an approved sample. or should i just post my sample CV and certificate of service and let the forum-ers say what needs to be edited?

in addition, AHPRA requires that the "role" must be included in the statement of service. what roles specifically? like coordinating with the health care team, suctioning, IV meds, etc? is "role" synonymous to a phil RN's job description?

moreover, in the "proof of identity part", i have australian visa for category A; overseas passport for category B; PRC certificate for category c; and for category d, i still need to convert my driver's license to an international one (i forgot how to drive haha!) did i already answer my own question? please validate...

(if these enquiries are categorized as "lazy or spoonfeeding", just ignore my questions)

valid questions.... but, i dont know the exact answers to your questions (but i need the answers for future needs)... one thing for sure, many forumers could answer your questions because they have done it.. me, dont know much the details as you asked.. just keep re-posting your query till someone coud answer it..

good luck..

God Bless.

This is so alarming. Does it mean that post registration course doesn't make you eligible to become an AuRN? Because I just got accepted by Flinders to enroll in this course through IDP, I actually paid the initial deposit. And based from what I've read in their offer letter, completion of the said course will proceed to Nursing registration, they even mentioned about clinical placements. This is also the advise of the IDP councilor. Please somebody clarify this. Help!

Don't be alarmed. Flinders Uni's graduate entry Bachelor of Nursing will give you your registration (if you can fulfill AHPRA requirements, ie, IELTS and so on) and a Bachelors Degree. It's a one year full time program in which you will have clinical placements and so on.

So, don't worry. There are many foreign registered nurses who are currently doing the program. Good luck.

The lowdown is that all nurses will eventually need Master of Nursing...to be nurses, but thats in the future.

Adding on to this: There are hospitals who give an allowance for a Masters or a Doctoral degree.

Not if its your first nursing degree they do not....hell there would be trouble, with a T, if they were paying someone that had an arts undergraduate degree a masters of nursing science as their first nursing degree, post grad allowance! just what would they be advance nurse practitioners in to get extra pay?

It would be like me doing a first degree in teaching - post grad in education to teach primary and then me getting more than teachers that did a Bachelor of teaching.

:mad:

You get allowances if you do an advanced post grad nursing degree thats an add on to your first nursing degree, this is in the nursing awards, all hospitals have to pay if you are working in that specialty. Usually this means if you have specialised (but not post grads are to all specialise) like in ICU, Midwifery, Renal, Emergency etc. you get paid for your expertise.

Conversion or upgrade can be used either or either really, I would think Australian nurses that need upgrad would need the research, professionalism isssues type subjects and not any clinical as they are already nursing.

But then if they haven't practised for awhile and are not registered anymore they would need a type of conversion degree along with international nurses with some clinical practise more so, Australian Health issues, refresh basic skills etc. I would take the word of the uni course advisors as they do this all the time and would not on purpose ever give you the wrong information not here anyway.

hehe.......my apologies. Didn't realize there are people with such qualifications. Yes your qualifications must be nursing qualifications to get the allowances.

And my second comment is based on the fact that I do teach this group of students at Flinders Uni. cheers.

@ cioman94: i'm glad they are valid questions. ahihi

hi! i e-mailed ahpra myself and this is what i got:

this is my e-mail to them:

greetings! i have several enquiries regarding nursing registration by overseas nurses. (i'm a filipino)

1. do you have a sample (not the format) for the curriculum vitae and certificate of service?

2. the curriculum vitae must be signed by me or by an employer? please clarify this issue.

3. ahpra requires that the "role" must be included in the statement of service. what roles specifically? like coordinating with the health care team, suctioning, iv meds, etc? is "role" synonymous to an rn's job description? i "role" the nursing skills itself?

4. in the "proof of identity part", i have australian "tourist" visa for category a; overseas passport for category b; registration certificate froma professional board for category c; and for category d, i still need to convert my driver's license to an international one, or i could just get a bank account. will all of this suffice?

5. do you have a list of bp schools with their requirements regarding nursing experience? (my worries is that i have 9 months unpaid volunteer experience). is it possible to be able to enrol in a bp school while i'm still in the philippines? (for example, through idp australia branch in the philippines)

6. are there any required immunizations and medical certificates?

7. what is the current situation of nursing unemployment/employment in australia and its states, especially those concerning overseas fresh bp graduates with zero nursing experience?

8. i didn't commit any crime and don't hold any criminal record in any country. do i still have to include an nbi clearance or any document that certifies that i didn't commit any crime?

* here is a gist of my qualifications

bsn, rn (philippines)

nclex-rn passer (california, usa)

ielts passer

9 months unpaid volunteer nursing experience (same job description and work as paid staff nurse) in a tertiary hospital

this is ahpra's reply:

i am writing in reply to your email to ahpra below

1. the cv format is on the ahpra website, and it is part of the application process to complete a cv in your own words. the application form gives the requirements for a statement of service from an employer;

2. the cv must be signed by the applicant as true and correct and by each employer against the section where you have stated employment details;

3. the role relates to the registration type e.g. registered nurse, enrolled nurse, midwife;

4. the proof of identity document for registration is a current passport and visa- the other requirements can only be met once you are resident in australia;

5. experience as a nurse is a different category to education as a nurse;

6. immunisation requirements for employment are an employer requirement, not a registration requirement;

7. you need to contact potential employers about this question;

8. include as a supporting document any information that describes your suitability for registration as a nurse in australia and refer to the suitability statements on the application form;

___

i hope i am not violating any confidential issues because i posted their reply in this forum. i only did that with the intention of helping others.

btw, i have some comments regarding their reply:

1. they don't have a straightforward answer regarding the "volunteer issue" (if i am right, they see volunteer as same with nursing education, even though i already stated that the job description of a staff nurse and a volunteer nurse is the same)

2. all non-australian citizens can only satisfy category a and b of proof of identity. so i should only get passport and australian visa? please clarify

3. we really have to do cv in our own simple ways...

4. i still need an international nbi even though my criminal record is a clean slate (but only for supporting document purposes)

I wonder how many people with criminal records from OS (probably are thousands already) but for the purpose of honestly, how many people with criminal records from OS would be here in Australia IF they took applicants word for it...........hundreds

as if we do not have enough of our own.

hehe.......my apologies. Didn't realize there are people with such qualifications. Yes your qualifications must be nursing qualifications to get the allowances.

And my second comment is based on the fact that I do teach this group of students at Flinders Uni. cheers.

and you don't know about nursing qualifications here and lecturing at university level?
