Canadian RN applying to US Graduate Schools

World Registration

Published

Hi Everyone,

I am Canadian and did an accelerated BScN in Toronto and have a BA in Health Studies.

I passed the NCLEX and have the Minnesota licence.

Looking to get my NY through endorsement. Anyone out there gone through this process recently?

I am looking into Grad schools. Anyone out there who has used WES vs CGFNS academic evaluation and found it to be faster / more efficient?

I want to try my best to apply this year, and want a fast service so schools can have the evaluations.

Anyone out there who has experienced this?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I would research the NY BON website, and see exactly what you have to do to get your license through endorsement.

NYS Nursing:License Requirements

As far as grad school--I would look into whatever university interests you, and see what an academic advisor through that school would suggest that you do. You may want to think about working as a nurse prior to moving on to grad school, however, dependent on what your goal is.

Best wishes!

I believe you will have to do CVS when endorsing to NY as you will be classed as International trained and all IEN have to go through CVS

Thank you for the comments and wishes.

Jadelpn - I do have 4 years of ER experience. I am ready to embark on other opportunities now :)

I went through the website for CGFNS. There is a lot of information. I will have to contact them and hopefully they will be helpful.

I wanted to know if along with CVS and Visa screen, I should also get my academic records evaluated by them or WES.

The schools websites state they accept both. WES sounds like they will take less time to process, once transcripts have been received.

I am thinking to just spend the money (not sure I would be able to do this if I did not have a job as an RN).

Everything is ridiculously priced on the CGFNS website and for each step and each school you want to send info to costs another $100.

Are there any other topics / forums you can guide me to on Graduate schools / International applicants?

I have done some search on this site, and have not been able to find anything specific on international applicants for graduate schools.

Thank you for your time and concern.

CGFNS are not known for being helpful.

Either companies are OK if the schools accept them although CGFNS can use the same documents they receive for CVS so may be a bit cheaper

If you find everything on CGFNS ridiculously over priced, what do you think of the price of going to grad school in NY as an international student?

Exactly. Grad school starts between $300-500 per credit hour. International student tuition is 2-4x the amount of base tuition in addition to fees and other charges. Plus you must show proof of funds for the entire duration of your stay to cover school tuition and fees, housing & living expenses plus incidentals and health insurance. It's not cheap for a US student to go to grad school. It is 2-4x more expensive for an international student

International students only pay more tuition in publicly funded universities so that would only apply if you're interested in attending any of the SUNY campuses. If your goal is to live and study in NYC, your options are mostly private schools where the tuition is high but the same for everyone...think Columbia, NYU, and Adelphi. Some NYC hospitals such as NY Presbyterian have generous tuition reimbursement benefits if you can find a job there.
