Started working in a small clinic as needed to cover a friend NP. I've been working off and on for a couple months. I got a paycheck and was told to cash it a certain day. So instead of depositing it, I went to the bank and tried to cash it. The bank said there was no funds in the account. This is the second time this happens. I told my boss and he fixed it but it still wasting my time.

Second time this happens in 4 months. I really like the job but I do not like that this seems to be a trend. I have another full time job so my question is should I just quit? Or give them more chances? The first time it happened I kept my Mouth shut but mentioned it this time it happened. Any input would be helpful!

Thank you

Sounds fishy- quit!!!

Thanks Sassy! I feel so abused and sad about this treatment. I overheard one of the MAs complain about the same thing.. So it's just not me...

You have earned your degree and work hard! You shouldn't have to worry if your paycheck will clear or not!

It's illegal to give bounced paycheck in nearly every state. Contact your state department of labor

In my state, to knowingly issue an insufficient or worthless check is against the law, arrestable, and will lead to both criminal and civil penalties for the issuer. If your employer did this, send the check through the bank and let they and the prosecutor work it out.

the truth of the matter is that they do have the money to pay you but whatever asin1ne reason (greed...cough cough) the owners would pocket all if not most of the income and conveniently forget to set enough aside for your paycheck. As silly as it sounds, they were hoping you wouldn't mind working for free. I've seen this before. Like what the others have said...you're better off elsewhere. And if the owner is a an MD as well...that's like the worst combination ever! Run the other way! Run fast!

Most likely there is a drug, gambling or embezzlement problem at some point along the chain of ownership in this clinic. Next time you get a check you may not be so lucky to get any money from it so leave immediately.

Thanks for all your advice! I will definitely be leaving ASAP!

Sometimes, it depends on the nature of the business environment in which we are operating. The cash flow may not always be 100% and the employer may say 'don't cash the check until X date', but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. If he's honest enough to ask you not to cash the check until a certain date then perhaps it's simply because he knows that the cash will not be there until that date. I respect that about people.

We live in a strange economy. Most people don't really have any money and are living on the edge. I think that it's ok to trust people about their intent to pay you unless they begin to do things to intentionally deceive you. So, run, if you'd just rather not deal with this. But its ok to be a bit more open-minded if when they tell you to cash the check is when the money is actually there AND you are willing to wait until then to cash the check.

You need to check state labor laws. You can issue a payroll check after 2pm dated for the next day which means funds available after 9am the date the check is written for. You must pay on schedule in regular intervals. The employer would be in huge trouble with the state if they tried these shenanigans in my state. Cash flow revenue cannot delay payroll. If this guy is not paying you, how can you be sure he is paying your or the taxes he is deducting No pay = no work. You have too much to lose and this whole thing sounds sketchy.
