Who else here provides abortion services? I do medication abortions and also sometimes provide sonography at one of our surgical centers. If/when the physician-only regulation on surgical abortion is lifted, I hope to provide MVAs as well. Of course, this is only a small part of what I do-most of my day is spent providing general gyn/sexual health care.

I come from a home birth background (was a CPM, became a CNM in May 2015), but have always found myself more drawn to the gyn and general public health aspects of midwifery, rather than the more traditional view of midwife as baby catcher (although of course I love that as well). I adore my job; I feel deeply fulfilled in my work, both personally and professionally.

I might be the only one here who provides terminations, but I doubt it! Just thought I'd speak up, in case anyone wanted to talk about why they chose this work, their experiences in practice, etc. I feel like the topic gets swept under the rug a lot, because of all the social baggage that can come with being labeled an "abortion provider." I think talking about it helps normalize this aspect of women's health care.

Hopefully it is clear that I am not trying to start a debate about abortion; please please save that for a different thread. Or at least be nice if you cannot help but post your objections to my work :) Happy to respectfully discuss my work with anyone who is interested, regardless of which "side" you are on.

I cannot discuss you work intelligently. My background is oncology, ICU and CCU. I didn't want to let your post pass, though, without thanking you for being willing to provide safe and legal abortions. There are too many who choose not to, and our freedom of choice is being curtailed. So thank you. You are a genuine hero.

I've often asked myself "why would someone perform abortions?" so...why do you want to provide MVAs/medical abortions? I know you stated you "feel deeply fulfilled personally and professionally." What makes you feel fulfilled?

Is MVA a type of surgical abortion? Googling brings up various cardiac terms and "motor vehicle accident."

This is an aspect of healthcare that as you stated, can get swept under the rug.

I too am interested in learning more as I have never done women's GYN care. What is an MVA? (My background is trauma and MVA to me is motor-vehicle accident)

What "post-abortive trauma"? Are you referring to the idea that women frequently suffer emotional difficulties after an abortion? That's largely a fiction invented by the anti-choice crowd in their efforts to scare women away from abortion.

I suppose that I could go and cite as many if not more sources that support the "myth" as I am sure was apparent when these citations came up and were selectively chosen. I would hate to turn legitimate suffering into a political on-line fight, but suffice it to say that organizations exist to assist women and men through their emotional difficulties after an abortion and they don't have any problem finding folks.

Here is just one. Having worked as a volunteer in the prison system I can say from first hand experience that abortion trauma affects men profoundly as well and is a confounding factor in their emotional well being.

Calling it a myth doesn't make it go away.
