Minot ND information

U.S.A. North Dakota

Published

A few weeks ago someone posted some info about Minot hiring nurses. I can't seem to find the post and was wondering if anyone recalls the name of the staffing agency to contact. I'm interested in finding out more. Also if anyone has any insight into what life is like there (I know it's cold!!!) I would love to hear it.

Hi all I live in ND and I consider myself from the Minot area, currently I live by Fargo. COL up there is higher than anywhere else in the state due to the flood that happened last summer and the oil boom (big influx of people). There is just no housing and any that you find will be outrageously priced. Now coming from areas where rent is $1000 on the lower end it may not seem like a lot but add in the fact that you are only getting low $20's for pay (which by the way is standard in ND) it will cripple you. Consider other areas. There are many jobs here, we DO have the lowest cost of living and unemployment in the nation. You can rent a 3 bed/2 bath house in Fargo or one of the smaller communities for around $600-$700 a month. The winters are usually cold and snowy, this winter so far is an exception. Last winter Fargo had 88 inches of snow and one month where we never got above 0 degrees. Dont forget the windchill! Thats what is so bad. You gotta be willing to put up with that to live here. Pluses are that besides low unemployment and COL this is a very safe state. In fact one of the safest in the nation. We have excellent school systems, the teachers actually care about the students. I dislike the winters but I couldnt imagine raising my boys anywhere else. People here are generally very nice and are always willing to help a person out. Sanford and Essentia Health in Fargo both have many openings and Altru in Grand Forks does too. Hope this helps!

thanks for the info! Grad of Dec. '10 here. I'm getting less than half that pay for non-medical home healthcare w/ no benefits, can't get an RN position anywhere here in rural Nor-Cal. I'm finishing an RN-BSN program hoping that will give me an edge, while going further into debt. I've applied as far south as San Diego...my story is similar to most new grads in CA. Wind chill and sub-zero temps are far less scary than loans due, no job, and/or foreclosure! thanks for the real-time info :)

How much does anyone expect to make as a new grad? I thought $22-$24 was fairly common. There are hospitals in other parts of the country that barely pay $20/hour. If given the option of no job vs. $22/hr - I'll take it! Not to mention the experience in the event I want to move somewhere else later. I think I'll call Trinity.

@ AZ911Nurse2B > The nurse recruiter/scouting agency Trinity is associated with quoted me $23/hr for my 4 years experience in med-surg. That is WAY too low! They pay new grads under $20/hr. Combine that with cost of living and next to non existant expensive housing spells trouble. Consider what netglow and mamabear4 wrote;... it would be crippleing. Also I checked out the nurse recruitor/agency Trinity is associated with and I think they are making their money off us nurses. Seemed pretty questionable (shadey). I wish you the best of luck though :>)

I say go for it. I may see you there sometime after May. There are. It a lot of jobs for new grids and we can't be picky. The previous poster has 4 years of experience so they have no need to move to North Dakota. But it is a very different story for us new grads.

I got a call today for a phone interview for NICU. I'll graduate in May...we'll see!

Trinity's recruiter website says $21-32 an hour for RNs. If you average the $5,000 sign on bonus into a year's salary at 40 hrs/52 weeks, it's another $2.40 per hour. Not great, but if orientation really is 6-16 weeks one-on-one (I am pretty green so good orientation is critical for me), it sounds like it may be worth it to have a job and get some experience under my belt. I'll be honest, the housing situation is intimidating, but there are still a lot of things in Trinity's favor. I haven't applied yet, but if I don't find something Midwest ASAP, it may be my next step.

Anyone who has already moved there... How did you go about finding housing, and what are your rent & utilities like?

They are no longer hiring for acute care positions. The recruiter just contacted me and stated that they have LTC positions only. He said the pay is $21.25.

That is strange that they're not hiring for acute care. I just checked the website and there are still a lot of med/surg positions.

That is strange. I noticed that too. I don't know if those positions are, now, being offered to experienced nurses only. I haven't contacted the hospital directly, maybe that would be a good idea. I thought they worked with this agency, so IDK.

Tinkerbell,

Did you hear that from an agency? You should contact the hospital directly. I applied there at the end of March and just recently had an interview. It seemed like they were still hiring. I know that they only hire experienced nurses for the ICU and ER, but there are still a lot of med/surg positions, especially the medical unit. I couldn't imagine that those positions would only be for experienced nurses as it might be hard for them to get experienced nurses since the pay is a bit low.

Yes, the agency told me this. I wonder what is going on with that? I will contact the hospital. Were you offered the position?
