I actually just got contacted by a nurse recruiter and have an interview for a new grad position this month. Would any of you be willing to part with some advice or words of wisdom for me? Thanks in advance!majisdicp likes this. - Jun 10, '12 by bigworldQuote from mihaSKHi mihaSK,I love DUKE. The staff is friendly and super helpful. I wish that hospital like that could be in SD. But I am ready to move if nothing else here. Yes, I accepted the offer. The program starts at the end of August, so I have plenty of time to move to NC. Are you still waiting to hear from SD? What unit are you interviewing for? Let me know how it goes.
If I were you, I would start looking for a place right now!! I've been finding that many of the more affordable aprtments are already gone!! Summer is the peak move in time down there. I'm actually going down this week to look at a few places and also say hello to my future manager
- Jun 11, '12 by mihaSKHi bigworld,
I've been looking at some places online. I won't be able to get there until late July. Let me know how it goes with you. - Jun 11, '12 by luckybellaQuote from mihaSKThanks for the advice, everyone!I love DUKE. The staff is friendly and super helpful. I interviewed with Scripps for their overall new grad program and they said we would know by June 20th. I would love to stay in SD but someone said they interviewed 290 of us for 70 spots...so over 200 of us won't get it. So, I'll take any interview I can get. Glad to hear that you love Duke! Does anyone know how the cost of living is in North Carolina? I've heard mixed opinions. - Jun 11, '12 by mihaSKQuote from luckybellaWell, it is definitely cheaper than California. There are nice houses with lots of land for reasonable prices. But your salary would be much less than in CA. Anyway, I think you get better quality of life in NC. Don't get me wrong, CA is beautiful and I love it but as a young professional I am struggling here. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Sorry to ask so many questions but I was wondering if you knew how many they interviewed and hired for your cohort? I am torn because the flights are so expensive for my interview date...I mean obviously I want to go but if they are interviewing like 100 people for 1 spot then my chances would be very low and the flight would be very expensive...you know? Did you go to school in SD as well?Well, it is definitely cheaper than California. There are nice houses with lots of land for reasonable prices. But your salary would be much less than in CA. - Jun 11, '12 by bigworldQuote from mihaSKI'll let you know how it goes. You might have to consider taking a place without seeing it. The properties closer to the hospital are newer and more expensive. I won't have a car right away, so proximity is important for me. You can find cheaper places a bit further out, but will most likely need a car.Hi bigworld,

Good luck in finding a place, I hope you find one you fall in love with! Where are you from originally?I'll let you know how it goes. You might have to consider taking a place without seeing it. - Jun 12, '12 by mihaSKQuote from luckybellaI interviewed for the OR unit. So, I think it is different than regular new grad program. I was selected to attend open house, which I believe they did for 2 days. Their website mentioned that this program is offered 1-2 times a year. They selected 30 applicants and from those 12-15 got the job offer. They have Tuesdays and Thursdays live chat on their website. You should try it and ask them all the questions you might have. They are very helpful.I've heard that the quality of living is great...such a beautiful state for sure! - Jun 12, '12 by mihaSKQuote from bigworldThanks bigworld. I am planning to get a car there. Right now, I am looking close to Durham or Chapel Hill. Do you know when they ask us to sign the contract and do all the health check ups? Are you planning to get relocation assistance from Duke?I'll let you know how it goes.
