Interview at Duke
It could just vary from group to group. What unit are you interviewing for?

Everyone was wearing business attire in our group. Not a single person wore scrubs.

I actually found something within walking distance of the hospital. I was on the waitlist for a little while before the apartment became available. Not everyone in the recruiting office is familiar with the particulars of our program. I would recommend contacting the person in charge (not allowed to mention names in public). Not sure if you can PM on here, but it would be easier for chat purposes.

Hi mihaSK, I haven't heard anything yet from HR. If I don't receive anything by the end of this week, I will call them on Monday.

I found a couple of apartmets. I'm on the waitlist at one place, and waiting for approval at the other. My manager also thinks there might be the opportunity to move into a place (extra apt..not roomate) with someone from our dept. But not certain that will happen.

As far as I know, we don't have to apply before we move. I think the requirement is that we apply within about 6 weeks once we sign the papers. I did not talk to a recruiter while I was down there. Just spent some time with my future manager and looked at some apartments. Do you have any apartments lined up yet?

I'm ADN and enrolled in an RN-BSN program.

The cost around the hospital is not too bad. A nice 1-bedroom can be found for about $800. However, most, if not all of the cheaper places are already gone. I didn't get a chance to really explore my last time there, but it seems nice enough. I'm from NYC originally.

I got an email form HR that said we would "go over benefits and sign contracts on the 24th of August". They'll be having a reception on that day for the new orientees. The date isn't set in stone, but we'll get further updates as we get closer.

I'll let you know how it goes. You might have to consider taking a place without seeing it. The properties closer to the hospital are newer and more expensive. I won't have a car right away, so proximity is important for me. You can find cheaper places a bit further out, but will most likely need a car.

Hi mihaSK, If I were you, I would start looking for a place right now!! I've been finding that many of the more affordable aprtments are already gone!! Summer is the peak move in time down there. I'm actually going down this week to look at a few places and also say hello to my future manager :)

mihaSK gave you some very sound advice. I would also suggest that you be prepared to answer the question: "why do you want to come to Duke?"

Once we hear back from HR about when we have to return for the health/drug screening, I plan to stay in Durham for a few days and start looking around then.

luckybella, Thanks for the good wishes! They seem to be fairly prompt with their replies. Those of us that received offers were notified the following week.

I have a feeling I'll be going to Urology/Gynecology. Do you have an idea of where you'll be going? I'm hoping to find a place and sign a lease by late July or early August. I'm also hoping to find something in Durham. Raleigh seems a bit further than I want to be from the hospital.
