Interview at Duke

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi all,

I am graduating this May, and I have just received word that I will have an interview at Duke University Hospital next week. I was wondering if anyone had any interview tips for me? This is my very first interview (besides a life guarding job) so I need all the help I can get!

Thanks so much to everyone who replies!

luckybella,

Congrats on your job offers! What floor did you interview on at Duke?

General Med/Stepdown. The manager and nurses were very nice!

Hey all! I just got back from my trip to North Carolina to interview at Duke...the manager and nurses were SO friendly and unbelievably nice, I was amazed. I got a job offer two days after the interview, but had just received an offer in my hometown in CA, so I had to turn it down. I would have loved to work at Duke, though! Good luck on your careers at such an amazing hospital :)

Congrats. I tried for SCRIPPS too, but I did not even make first 500. When I finished with my application, it was already too late. What unit did you get in?

Well, I know I will have a great time at Duke. Hopefully then, more doors will open :) and maybe SD will welcome me :)

That sucks :(. I know a lot of people who didn't hit the 500 mark so a lot of it was pure luck/timing. I got a DOU/Tele unit for Scripps. Did you go to school in SD? Duke is awesome and I know you will have a great time!! Duke also has an amazing reputation so I know you will be able to easily find a job once you get some experience!

Thanks. I went to school in bay area. But SD was always my dream place. My family has a house in Coronado, so we usually spend summers there. I love that place :)

I got an email form HR that said we would "go over benefits and sign contracts on the 24th of August". They'll be having a reception on that day for the new orientees. The date isn't set in stone, but we'll get further updates as we get closer.

Hi bigworld,

Did you hear anything else? I tried to contact HR but no reply.

Hi mihaSK,

I haven't heard anything yet from HR. If I don't receive anything by the end of this week, I will call them on Monday.

I tried to chat online with recruiter on Duke site but she did not have any news for me.

Did you find an apartment? I am going to be in Durham next weekend, so will check some places. Hopefully, it won't be too difficult to find something reasonable.

I actually found something within walking distance of the hospital. I was on the waitlist for a little while before the apartment became available.

Not everyone in the recruiting office is familiar with the particulars of our program. I would recommend contacting the person in charge (not allowed to mention names in public). Not sure if you can PM on here, but it would be easier for chat purposes.

Hi everyone! I have an interview for their new grad program next week. Did you go in wearing your scrubs (for those that had a shadow period right after)?

I didn't interview at Duke. But I have at other similar facilities. My advice would be to dress professional. Nice professional conservative clothes or a suit for the interview. At the last interview I attended and shadowed at I had the time to grab a small lunch and then change. I would also (since hospitals are notorious for walking) wear or bring comfy but dressy shoes and then pack your scrubs.

Everyone was wearing business attire in our group. Not a single person wore scrubs.
