is it true that there is a hiring freeze at north carolina hospials, namely cmc and presbyterian

what's hiring freeze?

what's hiring freeze?

A hiring freeze is when all hiring is halted, stopped, frozen, in other words NOBODY is getting hired. Typically this happens during slow economic times.

I spoke with a LPN I used to work with, she is having trouble getting a job and she has years of experience in LTC. I was surprised when she told me that, since many facilities are still placing ads in the paper. I guess facilities are hiring if you meet their specific need or are not too choosy of the shift. Any one else have any input?

I also heard this to be true as of January, I am unsure if it has been lifted yet. I graduated in December and they started a freeze right after my class finished interviewing. As far as I knew it was only a freeze with new grads, so if you have experience there may be more positions available. I would try to contact the main Human Resource centers for both hospitals rather than just posting your resume on the websites. You will get more answers that way, at least in my experience.

Tiff, I'll add to your comment that I think it must be if you have US nursing experience as well (I'm sure most of you on this board would). I'm American but trained in the UK, and by the time I return to the US, I'll have close to 2 years NICU experience. However, CMC told me that until I have six months US nursing experience that I'm considered a new grad!

I can confirm that there is most definitely a hiring freeze in the Triangle area (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) for new grads. In fact, offers for December grads have been resended (sp?) due to budget cuts at local hospitals. This is bad for a number of reasons. Obviously it sucks for those new grads and moreover, it is going to put them at the top of the list to be hired therefore bumping back the upcoming may grads and so on. No time limit has been determined as to how long this will last; it could be months and it could be years. :uhoh3:

A hiring freeze? No really. its just more challenging for a new grad to get hire. For example, Wakemed has 20 spots available for new nurses, Rex has 3 spots and i dont know for Duke University Health System. If you do the math, 60 plus spot for new nurses and how many graduating, a lot more. now lets talk about nursing jobs that require experience, Wakemed has over 50 spots, rex has 27 spots, and over 150 spots in Duke Health systems. That's not counting home health, case managers, and others hospitals. That's 227 jobs for registered nurses with at least one year experience, HIRE FREEZE? I DON'T THINK SO............

Just because you see jobs posted, it does not mean that the positions are available to be filled right now. And the majority are going to be looking for much more than one year of experience.

Things are changing on a weekly basis and not getting better. And this is true for the entire country and not just your locale.

Next issue is that there are many more new grads than what you have posted as needs. Also do not forget the fact that HR will post all new grad openings, but in actuality, most managers already know who they are going to hire based on students that have rotated thru their units to those that have done externships in the facility. So this will severely cut down what is available out there.

Next question for you would be since everyone else on this thread is speaking of a hiring freeze, have you tried to apply for a job lately and were immediatel hired? It is one thing to see a post, another thing to get hired. If there are jobs, they also are getting many more applications submitted as well.

I live in Wisconsin and it's the same thing here. In Minneapolis there is nursing cuts, as well as here locally in western Wisconsin. There are roughly 50 of us graduating from our ADN program in May. Both hospitals in our area are not hiring, aka part of the "hiring freeze". It's very depressing knowing you may not have the opportunity to find a job you will enjoy right after graduation...or a job at all for that matter. We've all been telling ourselves that things will change and everyone has to start somewhere!

We have nurses now where we are doing clinicals that will be mandated to leave during a shift or put on call before a shift.....It's always been that way but its just getting much worse. One local facility also mandated all staff to float to other areas of the hospital for coverage.....so if someone has worked as a Pediatrics nurse for 25 years...she/he would now HAVE to go to say orthopedics, oncology or Medical Surgical....

Such is life I suppose....We'll survive..we have to keep our hopes up that things will change.

This is very true. There are even jobs posted for new grads graduating this upcoming May when they weren't even allowed to hire the December ones!

I do agree that there is a hiring freeze here in North Carolina because I have graduated in May '08..and still can not find a job..I have applied numerous times at Rex and still can't get on!!! So YES there is a hiring freeze...hoping and praying that WakeMed would allow me in their New Graduate program!!! It's really hard out here right now!!!!
