Carolinas College of Health Sciences Pre-Nursing/Nursing

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi guys!

I have applied for Carolinas College of Health Sciences pre-nursing and nursing programs for the fall 2013. After applying I recieved a letter stating that they were also going to consider me for the summer pre-nursing term even though at the time I had no idea they even had a summer program (therefore my application was processed after the summer pre-nursing application deadline but if I got in I would still be very happy!). I was wondering, if I do not get into the pre-nursing summer program or the nursing program for the fall, am I going to find out if I got into the pre-nursing program for the fall in the same letters or is that all in all a seperate letter in itself!? Just wondering if anyone could let me know that would be great! Very anxious to hear back!!

Hi RunnerRN, I am planning to apply to CCHS for Spring 2014.. but I haven't decided yet if I want to apply for Nursing or Pre nursing. If I apply as Nursing and I'm not accepted, will they automatically consider my application for Spring pre-nursing? Do you have any tips? Also it sounds like you did pre-nursing.. do they have a summer semester and if so, would I be able to start in spring, do the summer semester, and then (hopefully) start the actual Nursing curriculum Fall 2014? Sorry for all the questions:)

When you apply, you can check boxes for both the Nursing and Pre-Nursing programs. If you only check Nursing, you won't be considered for Pre-Nursing. Nursing starts in January and August;Pre-Nursing starts in January, May, and August. USUALLY the way it works is this: You do 2 semesters of Pre-Nursing (A&P 1 and 2, Medical Terminology, and Math) to earn your guaranteed admission. If you've earned your spot, you'll have an off semester, which is when most people take Micro and their CNA course (required!). For example: I took A&P 1 and Math in spring 2012, A&P 2 and Med Term in summer of 2012 and earned my spot for January's Nursing class. I took micro in the fall (I already had my CNA and all the other required classes, like ENG, PSY, SOC, etc.) However, I was waitlisted (along with several others) for Nursing for fall 2012 so if a spot had opened up (which didn't happen), I would have started Nursing in fall 2012. If you have other classes that you need (like ENG, PSY, SOC, etc) most people take them during Pre-Nursing to get them out of the way. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend getting all of your other classes out of the way before starting Nursing!

I hope that helps!

That was really helpful, thanks for responding!! I am taking my CNA course this summer to get it out of the way and I've done all the pre-reqs except Micro, and A&P 1/2. I'm hoping to be admitted to Pre-Nursing Spring 2014.. if you don't mind sharing can you tell me what your GPAs were and SAT/ACT when you got into Pre-Nursing? I'm just wondering if I'm competitive enough. Also as far as gaining admission to Nursing after Pre-Nursing, do they just rank Pre-Nursing students according to GPA?

THANK YOU again :)

I'm a second career student so my SAT score was from 1984. LOL We didn't even have the ACT back then. I can't remember the score but it was average. However, my college GPA was/is a 4.0.

With pre-nursing, as long as you've completed the 4 classes with a 3.25 or higher, you're guaranteed a spot in the next nursing class. It seems to be about half the pre-nursing students sucessfully get a 3.25. HOWEVER...with the class before mine, more students got a 3.25 than there were spaces available, which means they had to be ranked according to PERCENTAGE grades for each of the 4 classes, not letter grades. Several people were waitlisted. Luckily spots DID open up and everyone got in, but it was very touchy for awhile! That has only happened once, I believe. The best way to guarantee your spot is to get a 4.0 in pre-nursing ;) .

Lol! Wow that's a really good GPA.

I get what you're saying, but after completion of the 2 Pre-Nursing semesters are you *required* to have an 'off' semester? Or if your GPA is one of the higher ones in your Pre-Nursing class can you gain admission for the semester starting next? I hope that makes sense... for example, if I were to start Pre-Nursing spring 2014, and finish in summer semester, is there any way that I could gain admission to the Fall 2015 Nursing class?

That's weird that only your class had that happen to them, where more got the GPA needed than there were spots available but at least everyone ended up getting accepted in the end.

I really appreciate your help and hope I'm not bugging you with all my questions ;)

Short answer, yes, you have to have an "off" semester. By the time you finish summer semester, the fall nursing students have already had their group advising session, met with their advisor, registered for classes, ordered their scrubs, verified vaccinations, etc. So YES, 95% of the time, you will have that off semester.

HOWEVER, once in awhile, a student will apply to the nursing program that starts as soon as their pre-nursing program ends and get in, thereby NOT having an off semester. That doesn't happen very often. Usually, students need that semester to do their CNA course and they want to take micro (and other classes they may still need) to get it out of the way.

Hello! I was just accepted into CCHS pre-nursing program to begin spring 2014. My high school GPA is a 3.0, but I also have a few semesters of college credits as well and my GPA from those courses is about a 3.3. Are you looking to go straight from high school? Everything I know about the school so far is that all of their programs are very good and they have many applicants each year and only so much room to get in. I originally applied to the nursing program for this fall but I didn't get in, at the same time I applied for pre-nursing but I applied too late at that point, so I re-applied for spring and just received my acceptance only a few days ago. If you want to go to their nursing program the pre-nursing route is a very good idea, as far as I understand a lot of students choose that option so they can maintain a high GPA in pre-nursing and get a guaranteed spot into the nursing program. I hope I helped a little, good luck (:

Hello emmarie91!

CONGRATULATIONS! that's awesome! you are very helpful. what courses did you take beforehand? i am enrolled in cpcc and i am just going to take microbiology, psychology, sociology, and spanish. do you mind sharing your sat/act score?

I am glad I can help, I took anatomy& physiology 1 & 2 as well as micro, I also took other courses such as human growth clinical psychology, human development, ethics, etc.. I am currently living in Florida, and applied to nursing schools here as well (the programs here are not as highly ranked as CCHS) and i completed the necessary pre-reqs for those schools, going into the pre-nursing program I may need to take some of those courses over again but I decided its worth it to get into their nursing program; so I will be moving to North Carolina shortly. I didn't take the ACT but my SAT wasn't incredible its about a 1450, I took it when I was 16 so I considered retaking it to boost my score if I had to.

If you enter the pre-nursing program you must take A&P 1 and 2, Math, and Med Term at CCHS. Those are the only 4 classes in their pre-nursing program. That's the route I took and I'm so glad I did. Now that I'm in nursing I'm not having to take any other classes because I had already taken all the other classes for my previous major.

impressive! well congrats to you as well! thanks for the response!

any advice on classes i NEED to take prior to applying? besides the 4 pre-nursing courses?
