Applying for Duke ABSN fall 2016

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hello, I am applying to Duke's ABSN program for the fall of 2016 and am wanting to chat with anyone else who is in the same boat! I'm wondering how hard it will be to get in based on GPA, prereqs etc.

Are there any current Duke students who would be wiling to share what their profile looked like before they got in? If they were wait-listed and got in?

Any information would help!

Hey! I know you posted this back in May but I am also in the same boat and planning on applying to the ABSN program at Duke for Fall of 2016. I recently graduated with my bachelor's in biology from Kansas State University. I'm wondering what the admissions are like for GPA at Duke as well.

There was a webinar a while back and from what I can remember I think the average GPA from the last cohort was like 3.6 and from the one before 3.59-3.78. These are the two sets I have written down on my notepad. I was also rushing to write things down so those may belong to a different cohort or something. As for acceptance, I know the cohorts are around 70-75 so they must accept a little more. I have heard that with the interview gone they really focus on your personal essay, letters, and of course grades from pre-reqs.

I majored in Psychology with a good GPA, not outstanding but not bad. I graduated a year ago and have been working job and going back to school to complete most of the pre-reqs.

Now I'm just waiting for the application to open! The admissions counselor said they would open the one for fall 2016 mid august so I'm kind of waiting until then!

Actually I spoke with Nora a few days ago, it comes out September!

I submitted my application for Fall 2016 a few days ago! I am just waiting for Duke to receive my transcripts and recommendations. Any one else finished their application yet?

Hi, ljfo! I'm also applying to Duke for the Fall 2016 term. I'm very excited. My application isn't done yet, but I plan on completing it in the next couple of days per Nora's advice. I've heard that they take a holistic approach in reviewing the applications. My GPA is also in that "meh" range, in my opinion. Not horrid, but not stellar. I'm still working on my prerequisites, but I'm also graduating with my first degree in three years because I can't imagine studying anything but nursing at this point! I've got experience as an EMT and some great shadowing experience, so I'm hopeful! I hope everything is going well for you :) I'm also applying to UVA, and I've started a thread on here for that cohort. These forums have been very quiet in comparison to previous years, which makes me a little suspicious. Where are all of our fellow applicants?? Have a great day!

Hi all! I am also applying, but I am struggling with the essay! Any tips?

My GPA could be better, but I have completed all my prerequisites. I am a senior and I'll graduate with my first degree in May. I'm from Arkansas!

For my essays, I sat down and wrote them all out over the course of a couple of days. Once they were all completed, I had a couple of close friends proof read them to see if they portray me well and if they seemed up to par. Once they both gave me their feedback, I had a professor proof them before I submitted them. I was extremely nervous about the essays since it is really the only impression we get to make on the acceptance committee since there are no interviews.

Hi all! I am also applying to Duke for the Fall 2016 cycle. I am currently editing my short essays, but the word/character counts are such a drag. @Sav768 I had already written an essay for another school I am applying to and just chopped it up for the Duke short essays. Not a super helpful tip, sorry! I think it would be helpful to brainstorm ideas for each of the questions and jot down everything that comes to mind when you first read the essay question. Then, piece it all together in a cohesive paragraph and have people read it. Also, don't be scared to rewrite the essays if you're not feeling what you wrote. Good luck!!

I did have to completely rewrite one of my essays, but it turned out much better because I did so.

Thank you for the tips I'll keep them in mind!
