SUNY Downstate ABSN Summer 2013

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi All!

I wanted to start this thread to create some conversation about our application to SUNY Downstate's ABSN program beginning Summer 2013. I've heard a lot of pros and cons about the program and I would like us all to share some of our thoughts! Do any of you have a Bachelor's already? If so what is it in? Where did you take your pre reqs and stuff? What are some of your grades? I took all of my pre-reqs at Suffolk Community College. I received an A in A&P I & II (incl labs), Microbio (incl lab), Statistics, Psychology, Sociology, Developmental Psych, Group Theory/Social Psychology, & English I. I received a B+ in Chemistry and English II. My TEAS V scores are Reading: 91 and Math: 87. I also have my BA from Stony Brook University. Also, I applied to SB last year and did not get accepted to there program. I'm afraid the same thing will happen with Downstate and I do not know what more a prospective student can do! If there are any recent grads of the ABSN program out there please give a shout out! Any advice or opinions will help! Good luck everyone and hopefully we will all be together in the summer!!!!

Jeanette,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Downstate and beyond.

Congrats on finishing your NP. I am betting that you will get a job soon.

I have a few questions about the schedule of classes during the summer sessions.

Are the classes scheduled on certain days and then clinicals on other days?

Do you remember if we have ciinical rotations during the first summer session or only the second?

I am just trying to plan my kids summer schedule and it is hard without knowing my own schedule.

thanks very much,

The notify you via mail if you are rejected, put on the wait list or accepted to the Nursing Program.

The academic programs at SUNY-Downstate are in good financial condition and are not affected by the closing of LICH. Downstate overstepped it's bounds by taking over LICH a few years ago and this decision to close the hospital is an effort to stop the hemmoraging of money.

Anyone else heard anything from Downstate???

Brooklyn gal:

I found out I got into SUNY Downstate yesterday, wahoo! I was wondering where you got your information about the financial position of its academic programs. I was told to email admissions about what I've heard in the news about the financial issues, but I would like some unbiased/outside info on this, so I know I'm making the right decision. It would be awful if something were to happen to the program while we were in it!

soccergal,

I know several staff people at Downstate and they have told me that SUNY (as opposed to Downstate as a whole) is not in trouble and we should have no problem completing our programs. This is what was told to me..I have no way of knowing if it is accurate.

Why does the admissions office want you to e-mail them about what you have heard? Are they worried???

Thanks..

Brooklyn gal:

It's just because I called admissions today, and the person that answered didn't have an answer. She said she heard that they are currently making renovations to some buildings there, so that gave her confidence, but that was all she knew. She said if I emailed them, they'd be able to forward it to someone who knows more info about the issue.

I don't think you need to worry about the school of nursing closing. There is some talk about closing some of the inpt units at downstate (in addition to lich).

I got my acceptance letter on Monday afternoon! Already sent in my acceptance form! I live in Suffolk County, is it worth driving? Or just taking the train?

I don't think it's worth taking public transportation from Suffolk. It would take at least 1.5 hrs each way and the lirr fare can really add up.

I have the opposite response.

You could study on the train and the traffic will be pretty bad if you are driving at rush hour.

You can take the train to Atlantic Terminal and get the 2, 3 train to near SUNY-Downstate.

Maybe you should check the schedules and see if it is feasible.

Congrats on getting accepted and I look forward to meeting you.

Hi-

I recently was accepted to the SUNY Downstate accelerated BSN program (woo!). I'm going to accept, and was just wondering if any current students or recent graduates are reading this board and would be willing to talk with/meet with me about the program, just so I can get some more info about it, your experiences in it, or anything like that, and get a head start on anything I can take care of now (e.g., buying books, uniform, I don't know what else).

If you want a female uniform shirt, sz L, I have 2 to sell.

What else would you like to know?

Thanks, but female uniform shirts in any size aren't going to be what I need. Wondering a lot of things, some of which might be hard to answer in a forum like this. If there's anything it's worth knowing in advance about any of the classes/professors/instructors, what the job search process is like as you move towards graduating/graduate, if there's a good place to grab lunch near school, etc., etc.

I don't know which professors are still there. I was there 4 years ago (can't believe it's 4 years!).

Job search is very, very tough and don't expect much help from school. Try to get as much out of your clinicals and independent study as far as getting into a hospital after graduation. A number of my classmates got jobs in places they did independent study.

Last call for Downstate uniform shirts before they go into recycling! One is brand new still in package.
